left Among the big names present were Stevie Wonder, Usher, Patti Labelle, Yolanda Adams and Gerald’s father, Eddie Levert of the O’Jays. Journalist Ed Gordon and television personality Judge Greg Mathis were among the eulogists. Angela Winbush also sang her classic “Your Smile,” a performance highlighted by her removing her false eyelashes on stage. “I’ve been crying all morning, y’all,” she explained after removing the lashes and getting into the song. Eddie Levert and his son Sean, who joined Gerald in the group Levert, brought the house down with a rendition of Luther Vandross’ “Dance With My Father.” Fans began lining up at 6 a.m. on a rainy Cleveland morning to make sure they got in to this public memorial service to pay tribute to the soul singer, who died November 10 of a heart attack. By 10, the line had turned one corner and approached another. Many fans drove from several states dressed in purple, Levert’s favorite color, to attend the ceremony. The service lasted more than three hours, and it was more celebratory than depressing. “When I came here, I expected to mourn,” Usher told the crowd. “I actually cried tears of joy.”
