The Louisana Weekly reports that the day-long seminar linked young survivors of Hurricane Katrina with celebrities, city officials, community and civil rights activists, as well as legal advocates in a HipHop Town Hall meeting. In attendance were concerned local and national artists including BG, Mia X, Joe Blakk, Head-Roc, DJ Jubilee, Sess 4-5, Fifth Ward Weebie, and L.O.G.
left In light of the increasing rates of homicide, suicide, and depression in New Orleans, there was also a press conference held earlier in the week where organizers announced a plan for a campaign to curb violence, and asked for the input of the community’s youth.
"Tragically, violence is igniting among youth, many of whom find themselves shut out of the rebuilding process, says Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr, president of the Hip Hop Caucus, a local newspaper that focuses on these issues. “The increase in violence, which has emerged as a result of despair and desperation, has been intensified by the failure of the government to adequately and comprehensively provide access to education, employment, or even hope of a positive future for young people.”
