On November 13th 2004, while in a Manhattan recording studio, ODB collapsed, was rushed to the hospital and was pronounced dead an hour later. According to the New York Medical Examiners Office, the cause of death was an accidental overdose.
left Ol’ Dirty Bastard was unconventional. And, though his character may have led some to think he was mentally unstable, when ODB yelled, “Shame on you when you
stepped through to the Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Brooklyn Zoo!” on 1995’s “Brooklyn Zoo,” (Return to the 36 Chambers:
The Dirty Version), it was obvious that he had a charismatic spirit despite his internal conflicts.
OBD was also a kind person with a big heart. In February of 1998, after witnessing a car accident from the window of his Brooklyn recording studio, Ol’ Dirty Bastard and others rushed to help save a 4 year-old girl that was trapped under a car. At the Grammy’s the night after, he gave an impromptu speech where he hailed the unforgettable, “Wu-Tang is for the children!”
Ol’ Dirty Bastard will always be remembered as an energetic force that spiced up tracks like “Fantasy” by Mariah Carey, “Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check” remix by Busta Rhymes, and “Ghetto Superstar (That Is What You Are)” (Bullworth soundtrack). He also made hits like 1995’s “Brooklyn Zoo,” “Shimmy, Shimmy Ya,” and “Got Your Money,” featuring Kelis.
ODB is survived by his mother and thirteen children.
R.I.P. ODB.
