Mike Tyson Arrested, Lands in One of the Toughest Jails in America

Tyson was leaving Arizona’s Sugar Daddy’s nightclub in his black BMW when he drove erratically through a stoplight and almost crashed his car into a police vehicle. He was followed by officers and surrendered without incident. A cocainelike substance was found in his car. Tyson failed a sobriety test. Tyson is being held in the famous Maricopa County Jail, which is run by the no-nonsense Joe Arpaio, who is called “America’s Toughest Sheriff.” Arpaio is known for housing inmates in tents, even in Arizona’s more than 100-degree heat, and for requiring those in his jails to wear pink underwear. He confirmed with VIBE that Tyson, who at age 20 became the youngest heavyweight boxing champion, will not be spared any of his strict rules or treated in a special manner, other than being kept in isolated quarters for the other inmates’ and his own protection. Tyson’s arraignment is scheduled for today. The troubled boxer has a history with the Arizona police. He is registered in the state as a sex offender because he was convicted of raping a beauty pageant contestant in 1992. Also, in the early 1990s, Tyson was invited by Arpaio to speak to the inmates about alcoholism and drug abuse—the same offenses he is now charged with.
