Dreamgirls (see photos) lost out to four dramas (Babel, The Departed, Letters from Iwo Jima, The Queen) and a comedy (Little Miss Sunshine). While Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson were nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Actress for their roles in the musical, Beyonce (see bio, photos) was snubbed in the Best Actress category. This is the singing superstar's second blow in a week, after she lost the Golden Globes "Best Actress" Award to Meryl Streep (Devil Wears Prada).
Other notable Oscar nominees include: Forest Whitaker (Best Actor, The Last King of Scotland); Penelope Cruz (Best Actress, Volver); Djimon Honsou (Best Supporting Actor, Blood Diamond); and Rinko Kikuchi (Best Supporting Actress, Babel). In the Best Director category, Babel director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritum received his third Oscar nomination. The Mexico City native had been previously nominated for Best Foreign Film (Amores perros) and Best Director (21 Grams).
You can see a full list of this year's Oscar nominees here. The Oscars will air live on February 25, 2007, on ABC.
