Mia Farrow held a UN News conference to discuss what she witnessed in Darfur this month.

In a press conference Tuesday, Mia Farrow, actress and UN Goodwill Ambassador, detailed her experiences in Darfur's wartorn and decimated villages. Darfur, a region of Sudan in Central Africa, has been wracked by genocide, government oppression and drought since 2003, and 2.5 million citizens have been displaced. "This is an extremely traumatized and neglected population," Farrow said. She detailed villages burned to the ground, refugees with no hope for assistance, and citizens living along the side of the road. When her convoy, driving along a barren road in the Central African Republic, came to a stop after passing "burned village after burned village after burned village," people began emerging from the darkness. They were "like specters," she said, "emaciated, with remnants of clothes or no clothes at all, terrified." The refugees said they were too afraid to return to their villages, but they were also afraid of being found in hiding. In Eastern Chad, the government is fighting with Sudan-based rebels and militia, devastating local populations and villages, where over 400,000 citizens have been killed.
