The invention of the "Cellular-Book" - the world's first electronic, hand-held device with a rollable display meant for reading news, personal email, and books - was announced this week. An Italian company, Telecom Italia, will co-develop the device with the British company Polymer Vision, according to a press release. The companies will present the gadget on Feb. 12 in Barcelona at the 3GSM World Congress.
The Cellular-Book features a rolling display touch-screen and four gigabytes of memory. When the screen folds up into itself, its total size is smaller than a mobile phone. The device will incorporate a mobile network from which books can be purchased and downloaded. It can also download and play music, audiobooks and podcasts.
The announcement comes not long after the world's oldest print newspaper, Sweden's Post och Inrikes Tidningar,, converted to an online-only format. That paper has been publishing since 1645, when it was founded by Queen Christina. The country's Justice Ministry chose to move it to the web on Jan. 1.
The paper's editor-in-chief, Roland Haegglund, said, "The change in format is of course a major departure, for some possibly a little sad, but it is also a natural step."
