Rick Rubin May Be Mined for Columbia Co-Chair

The Def Jam co-founder is reportedly in talks to help head up Columbia Records.

Producer Rick Rubin, who legendarily co-founded Def Jam from an NYU dorm room in 1984, is talking to Columbia Records for a possible new label gig - this time as Co-Chair as the company.

Rubin helped shape the sound of hip-hop in the '80s, lending his gritty big-beat aesthetic to classic rap joints like Run-DMC's Raising Hell and LL Cool J's Radio, while keeping his rock chops with the likes of Slayer's Reign in Blood. More recently, he worked with Jay-Z ("99 Problems"), (Justin Timberlake ("Another Song (All Over Again)") and the new album for The Inc. recording artist Vanessa Carlton.

Rubin currently heads his own imprint, American Recordings, which is distributed by Warner Music.

A representative for Columbia had no comment.

I think Rick Rubin becoming the Co-Chairman of Columbia Records,....would be a good look for Sony Music. Because.... It would bring back respectability to the label , that was once touted as one of the most creative & innovated record companies in all of music.
