A federal jury ordered TVT Records to pay Slip-N-Slide Records $9.1 million dollars for blocking the release of early Pitbull recordings. In a trial ending Wednesday, the jury allocated $2.3 million for compensatory damages and $6.8 million for punitive damages.
The suit stems from Welcome to the 305, a CD Slip-N-Slide was set to release in 2005 before TVT, Pitbull's label at the time, blocked its distribution. Pitbull had been signed to Slip-N-Slide in 2001. He signed with TVT two years later, and shortly thereafter released M.I.A.M.I., which went gold. Slip-N-Slide is a Miami-centric label (Trick Daddy, Trina) while TVT is the nation's largest indie; their hip-hop roster includes Lil Jon and Ying Yang Twins. TVT accused Slip-N-Slide of trying to profit from the popularity and renown they developed for Pitbull, and blocked the release of the early recordings by telling distributors Welcome to the 305 was illegally recorded. TVT intends to appeal the verdict.
