NBC has renewed "30 Rock," the funniest show on television, for a second season. The Tina Fey-created show has received lowish ratings from viewers, but its satirical take on comedy television has been hailed by critics - and hip-hop fans, as recent guests have included LL Cool J and Ghostface Killah. It has also garnered Alec Baldwin Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for his portrayal as a sleazy network TV CEO.
The show, which stars Fey, Tracy Morgan, and Baldwin, offers an incisive, hilariously funny critique of racism, feminism, loserdom and major corporations - but it's done so very subtly. In a recent episode entitled "The Source Awards," Tracy Morgan's character, Tracy Jordan, hosted said event dressed as Oprah Winfrey in order to avoid a fracas with a litany of rappers he'd enraged in the past. Meanwhile, the show has hinged itself on the sharp joke that black male actors can't get work unless they're dressed as women. It's this style of self-aware, sophisticated humor that's made "30 Rock" an early classic.
"From the beginning, '30 Rock' has proven to be the kind of quality comedy that doesn't come around very often," said NBC President Kevin Reilly in a statement. The network has ordered a full second season consisting of 22 episodes. What.
