Hip-Hop Elevates Young Minds

Elementary school students perform for Ludacris, Simmons.

Contrary to what you may have heard, hip-hop is not the death-rot choking the nation's aorta. Rap lyricism has, in fact, helped many a child sharpen his or her young brain into tack-point status. For example: this Monday, 30 elementary students, aged eight to 12, from 15 cities across the country, will travel to New York to compete in a poetry slam hosted by America SCORES, a nonprofit which uses hip-hop to "inspire literacy in at-risk youth." Before the event, America SCORES will honor hip-hop entrepreneur Russell Simmons and superstar rapper Ludacris for their leadership, philanthropy, and overall support of hip-hop as a great force for political change. The slam, hosted by poet Patricia Smith, goes down April 30 at the HBO Theater in New York from 6-9:30 pm. Limited tickets are available; for more information about the event or America SCORES, click here.

As many mentioned before and Public Enemy even better " Hip Hop is the CNN of the Streets". So more than anything else hip hop will definitely reach the youth and make them listen more. Listening is one thing but how to instill a young mind on how to filter out whats reality, offensive, or negative is the hard part.

WHY IN THIS CELEBRITY OBSESSED CULTURE AREN'T WE PREPARING OUR CHILDREN FOR MORE THAN JUST DREAMS OF BEING A RAPPER OR AN ATHLETE?
WHILE I SUPPORT ANYONE OUT THERE TRYING TO FUFILL A DREAM- THE REALITY IS THAT IN BOTH OF THESE FIELDS- LESS THAN 1 PERCENT MAKE IT!

THEN WHAT? I WORK IN ENTERTAINMENT AND THE MEDIA...I RUN ACROSS A GRIP OF "FROMER ATHLETES" AND "ASPIRING RAPPERS"...HOW MANY DO ALL Y'ALL KNOW?

MAYBE NEXT YEAR- INSTEAD OF A "POETRY" CONTEST AMERICA SCORES CAN HOLD A "MARKETING CONTEST" OR A "BUSINESS MANAGEMENT STRATEGY COMPEITION"...SOMETHING THAT ENCOURAGES OUR KIDS TO GET AN EDUCATION TO FALL BACK ON JUST IN CASE THE BIG RECORD DEAL DOESN'T HAPPEN!!!!!
