Ornette Coleman has received the Pulitzer Music Prize for Sound Grammar, a live concert recording documented in Germany in 2005. This is the first time a recorded document has won the music Pulitzer. Coleman was not included on the 140-musician list of nominees, but Pulitzer panelists banded together, broke out and awarded the Prize to the 77-year-old nonetheless. On Monday, Coleman told the AP, "I'm grateful to know that America is really a fantastic country... And here I am."
The Pulitzer Prize for music has historically been awarded to classical musicians - a tradition some Prize committee members wish to change. According to an AP report, board member / USC professor Jay Harris said the Pulitzer has "effectively excluded some of the best of American music."
John Coltrane received posthumous recognition from the Pulitzer committee this year, as well, for his "iconic centrality to the history of jazz."
