7303 Records / Studio 7303 proprietor Ronald "Ronnie" Bookman filed suit yesterday against Rap-A-Lot and James Prince, claiming the competitor used intimidation and assault in an attempt to drive him out of business. According to a release issued by Bookman's lawyers, a lawsuit was filed April 12 in Harris County State District Court.
Bookman has accused Prince of orchestrating a beating on Jan. 25, 2007 at Prince's Houston recreation center. The suit alleges tat Bookman arrived at the gym believing Prince wanted to settle a dispute, but was instead allegedly assaulted by Prince's unnamed associates, causing head trauma, a broken nose and eye injuries. [Photos here.] John B. Thomas, Bookman's lawyer, commented, "We believe Mr. Prince's plan was to eliminate competition in the Houston Rap and Hip Hop music business through the use of threats, intimidation and violence."
According to the press release, Prince and Bookman were arguing over an upcoming Bun B feature on rapper JV's Rap or Die released by 7303 Records. The lawsuit alleges Prince and Rap-A-Lot "agreed to allow Bun B to record the feature Wrong for Dat and assign all rights to 7303 Records in exchange for substantially discounted or free studio time at Bookman's recording studio." Bun B recorded 2005's Trill at Studio 7303 from June to September 2005. But according to the suit, Prince refused to release the Bun B feature after Warner Brothers approached Bookman with a proposed "label deal" to develop, record and promote rap and hip hop artists - a deal which, according to the press release, squashed Warner's interest in JV's record after the Bun B feature was canned. Said Thomas, ""We believe that Mr. Prince feared that his influence and financial well-being would suffer if Mr. Bookman and 7303 Records were successful."
According to the release, the lawsuit alleges breach of contract, battery, unfair competition, duress, conspiracy and unjust enrichment. The plaintiff is also seeking a restraining order against J. Prince and associates.
