Anika Noni Rose: Officially a Princess
Dreamgirl will voice first Disney film featuring a black heroine.
From Dreamgirl to Disney Princess: Variety reports that Anika Noni Rose has been cast for the voice of Princess Tianna in Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" - the first Disney film ever to star a black princess. She allegedly beat out Alicia Keys, Tyra Banks and Jennifer Hudson for the role.
"The Princess and the Frog," set in 1920s New Orleans, has already come under fire for certain rumored plot points - that "Tianna" was once named "Maddy," now changed for its proximity to a slave name... that Tianna plays a chambermaid whose love interest is a European prince. A spokesperson for Disney has disputed the internet-spread information, calling it a work in progress. The film is released in 2009.
