RAJNI LUCIENNE JACQUES, 26It's been said that if you don't grind, you don't shine. But, truthfully, it's not always easy out here. You're overworked, you're out of ideas, you're sick and tired of being, well, sick and tired. And sometimes, especially this month, you would rather be outside enjoying the beautiful weather than holed up in a hot office - grinding. We can relate. Lucky for us, we're still shining, and it's all because of people like Rajni Lucienne Jacques, 26, our resident Accessories and Beauty Editor, who specializes in keeping VIBE looking beautiful, no matter how we're feeling at the time. "I need to enjoy my young years, so I'm going to do plenty of tanning and relaxing this summer," says the Queens-born, New Jersey-bred fashion connoisseur. "But fashion is not always fabulous - you've got to work!" Jacques pulls double-duty this month, first helping our Market Editor Joshua Peskowitz accessorize three different looks for the summer season in Volume's vStyle section ("Dope Boy Fresh," page 72) before pitching in to style a group of military men ("Training Day," page 116). The Rutgers University graduate is also slated to represent VIBE and VIBE VIXEN on the small screen this summer, styling contestants from Atlanta, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles on Lifetime television's makeover show, Next Stop: New You! Rajni's favorite net spot : Style.com. "It's a look book, where you can find the photos from all the latest runway shows," she explains. "It's entertaining, but it serves as a dictionary, as well."
CLAY CANE, 30, took time out from promoting his book on the black and Latino ballroom scene (Ball-Shaped World, due in 2008) to interview Eve for vibe.com. "Eve lacked the 'I am a star' persona," opined Cane, "and believe me, I've seen a lot of it. She had on a white cap, not too much make-up and looked me right in the eye the whole time. The only thing Hollywood about Eve was her teeth. I remember saying to myself, 'Damn! Her teeth are like Wite-Out!' She has that Hollywood smile!" Cane, a New Yorker via Atlantic City, combines pop culture, politics and social commentary on his website, claycane.net. He also contributes to Men's Fitness, blackplanet.com and the New York Blade, among others, where he interviews big timers from Beyonce to 50 Cent to Hilary Swank. But don't get his journalism twisted. "My recent interview with an Ex-Gay made its way all over the internet and had excerpts in the Village Voice. So yeah, I got some Access Hollywood in me. But dammit, I got some Barbara Walters in me, too!" Web-wise, the first three sites he checks in the morning are claycane.net ("Got to make sure it's still running!"), Myspace ("Like unsafe sex, it's so out there and it's too easy to catch a virus!"), and Rockacandy.com, which he says is "a hot site for urban entertainment."
