Secret Service protecting Illinois senator.

As typical with all presidential candidates, the US Secret Service is protecting Illinois Senator Barack Obama, CNN reported today. Michael Chertoff, Secretary of Homeland Security, authorized the detail and released a statement: "As a matter of procedure, we will not release any details of the deliberations or assessments that led to protection being initiated. For security reasons we will not release the timing, scope or details of any protective operations." According to CNN, the Secret Service has said no specific threat has been leveled against Obama. All presidential candidates receive Secret Service protection, but this is the earliest ever for a candidate - nine months before the primaries. In comparison, Democratic candidate John Kerry received the detail in February 2004 - nine months before the final election. As a former first lady, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton is already provided with protection by the Secret Service.
