Gloria Carter, Jay-Z's mother, was honored in New York yesterday for her oversight of the Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund, which mentors students and helps disadvantaged youth with college tuition. Queens Councilman Thomas White Jr. sponsored the ceremony at City Hall, where the award for "outstanding contributions from the community" was presented among a crowd of councilpeople and Carter's son, Jay-Z.
In the same ceremony, Mathieu Eugene was sworn in, becoming the first-ever Haitian member of the Council.
