Yolanda Denise King, the oldest daughter of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, passed away Tuesday night in Santa Monica, CA. She was 51 years old.
King was born in 1955 in Montgomery, Ala., and was just a baby when her home was bombed during the civil rights era.
She was a beacon of civil rights by her own accord, finding her path as an actress, an author, and an advocate for peace and nonviolence. She founded Higher Ground Productions, through which she spoke of positive social change and inner peace. She was a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the NAACP.
Rev. Al Sharpton spoke highly of her character Wednesday. "Yolanda never wavered from a commitment to nonviolent social change and justice for all," Sharpton told the AP. "She was the first daughter of the civil rights movement and never shamed her parents or her co-activists."
The Rev. Joseph Lowery, a close friend of the King family, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "She was a princess and she walked and carried herself like a princess."
Family and friends did not know the cause of death, though Steve Klein, a spokesman for the King Center, said King's family believes it may have been related to a heart problem.
She is survived by her sister, the Rev. Bernice King; two brothers, Martin Luther King III and Dexter Scott King; and an extended family. Funeral arrangements are still being made.

For Immediate release:
On the death of our friend Yolanda King, we as a GLBT community remember her for her tireless fight for equality. With in the public eye: and also with in the board room of the King Center: She like her Mother is a light of Justice and non violence resistance. For my partner and I. Our hearts mourn with the king family and the rest of the world.
Yolanda, rest on my sister: And dance and sing with your father and mother. In a land where inequality can not exists: and in a land where beloved community is paved with streets of Gold. And may your spirit and the spirit’s of your Mom’s and Dads, Rosa, and so many of the others continue to call us to create beloved community on this planet.
