Brooklyn may not be the birthplace of hip-hop, but it is the breeding ground for the world's freshest MCs. The creative minds at the Brooklyn Bodega, a collective of hip hop junkies who run brookylnbodega.com and produce events nationwide, honor the borough's place in hip hop history at their annual 3rd Annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, which kicks off today.
The free five-day bash, which takes place at various venues in Dumbo, is a celebration of the culture from its inception. It begins tonight, at powerHouse in DUMBO, with a 50 Year Anniversary tribute to one of soul music's founding record labels, Stax Records, and ends with an all-day concert on June 23rd featuring Ghostface, Heltah Skeltah's Sean Price, and Kanye-soundalike Consequence, to name a few. This year's line-up is short on MTV darlings but long on talent. With East Coast legends placed alongside independent and underground artists, the BHF is the backpacker's summer jam and hip-hop purist's wet dream. The final all-day concert will be preceded by a global hip hop exhibition on the 14th and a screening of Wildstyle, the quintessential b-boy flick, on the 22nd. For more info, visit Brooklyn Bodega.
