"2 Fast" Discrimination Suit Settled

Frank Davis, an African American assistant director who sued Universal Pictures for discrimination, settled with the company for an undisclosed amount yesterday (June 13). However, the federal government will continue with the case, in its first-ever instance of a discrimination suit against a Hollywood studio. Davis was the first assistant director for John Singleton's 2 Fast 2 Furious when he was let go. Universal disputed the claim, saying Davis was "not doing his job," according to Universal outside council Steve Cochran. But Davis countered that his firing was racially motivated, and that Universal's decision was not based on the grounds of his performance. The settlement came one day after Singleton's testimony, in which Singleton stated he disagreed with Davis' firing, but stayed on with the movie in order to get it finished. Davis and Singleton first worked together on 2001's Tyrese tour-de-force, Baby Boy.
The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has said it will continue with the suit despite the settlement.
