Remy Ma Arrested in Shooting Incident
Update: BX rapper turned herself in to NYPD Saturday evening.
After being sought by NYPD for allegedly shooting a woman in the early morning hours of Saturday (June 14), Bronx rapper Remy Ma, 26, has turned herself in to police. She was accompanied by her lawyer, and arrested on charges of attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. She pleaded not guilty in a Manhattan court and was released on $250,000 bail.
At around 4 am Saturday, on the corner of West 14th Street and Washington in Manhattan's trendy Meatpacking District, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, 23, was shot two times in the torso after a dispute over $2,000. She is currently in the hospital and in stable condition.
According to the NY Daily News, Remy and Barnes-Joseph were childhood friends. They had attended a friend's birthday gathering together that night in the swank party neighborhood, where Remy reportedly accused Barnes-Joseph of stealing the money in question. After they left the party, the rapper allegedly approached Barnes-Joseph's vehicle, opened the driver's side door, and shot her twice in the stomach.
Witnesses say Remy then sped off in a blue Escalade. When she crashed her SUV, she and several other unidentified men fled the scene on foot.
VIBE spoke with Remy Ma this past Thursday (July 12) regarding the small controversy surrounding her her recent mixtape, Shesus Kryst, which depicts an illustration of the rapper nailed to a cross.
"When I actually put the cover on my myspace page, actual blogs and sites went crazy," Remy told VIBE Senior Editor Keith Murphy. "[They were saying it's blasphemy and I should never compare myself to God. But when I came up with the whole concept of 'Shesus Kryst' and everything, I was thinking, 'Yo, it would be dope, we do the cover like the Makaveli cover and it'd be a girl.' I never [knew] people would take it so far."
"I just think people tend to forget that this is entertainment... people tend to forget that this is not real life. This is movies. This is video. It's not realistic," she continued. "When I came up with the name 'Shesus Kryst,' I really felt like I had died and came back. I have a nasty shadow over my head... it's real hard to do what you want when people don't like people you're affiliated with. There will be a lot of times that people [will be like] 'Well, who you working with? Is this person still involved? Naw we can't do this cause I don't want to have to deal with that.' I had to really just cut all ties, start all over and do everything from the beginning."
Remy was a protege of the late Big Pun, who discovered her in the Bronx when she was still a teenager. After his death from a heart attack in 2000, she was affiliated with Fat Joe and Terror Squad, until a falling out last year. Her first solo album, There's Something About Remy, was released in 2006. She is scheduled to drop the follow up, Punish Her, this October on her own label, Reminisce Music.
