"T.I. vs. T.I.P." Debuts at Number One

Email this article Print this article Send us a tip

T.I.'s record highest-rating rap debut of 2007. Read about it in VIBE's August 2007 issue.

And the man stays laughing. T.I. vs. T.I.P., the fifth-album by plat rapper T.I., debuted at number one on the Billboard charts its first week, selling 468,000 copies, so says Soundscan. That top spot-grabber is a little less than the first week sales of his last hit record, King, which moved 522,000 copies. But King was propelled by the oomph of "What U Know," the monstrous DJ Toomp track that ruled 2006 with a #3 on Billboard. Meanwhile this album's single, "Big Shit Poppin (Do It)," debuted at #30 on the Hot 100. Still, the slide in T.I.'s moved units is not shocking: 2007 has been overall low-impact year for album sales. For hip hop sales in particular, T.I. vs. T.I.P. is the highest-selling first week for any rap album so far. Barring hoped-for hits from Kanye West and 50 Cent (and Lil Wayne, a sleeper rapper-eater?), Tip has a fighting chance to remain on top. Of course, VIBE already knew about T.I.P. - AND T.I. The megastar is fresh and clean on the cover of our August issue, NOW ON STANDS. To read his VIBExclusive thoughts on fame, money and Diana Ross, plus other web-only excerpts from the interview, click here. In other news, Kelly Rowland's album, Ms. Kelly, sold 86,000 copies its first week, despite a modest promo push, features from Eve and Snoop and her Destiny's Child pedigree. Both sales are yet another indication of the internet being a vastly different place from the real world: in blogland, T.I.'s album has been summarily dissed, while many gossip sites and blogs view Kelly Rowland as the second coming of... Jennifer Hudson? Still, second and third week sales will reveal all.

Man Im from the south (New Orleans,LA), and Imma keep it real and say that this lastest T.I. album was garbage. Too commercial, too much for the ladies. I like T.I.P. when he did "Dope Boyz", Urban Legend, and some of the older albums. I respect his grind, but Im not feeling this album, nor was I feeling "King". Just my opinion

I too thought the interview was very disrespectful to Tip and to his friends and family. To attempt to get gory (unnecessary) details about his friends death and to be so insensitive about the loss of his child really turned me off. There are better questions to be asked like words of wisdom to a young up and coming entrepreneur or how he stays focused in an industry so hell bent on tearing rappers down. Please VIBE hire more high quality journalist and overall just do better. If this continues my subscription will not be renewed.

THIS IS THE WORST INTERVIEW I HAVE EVER READ. THIS WAS SO INSULTING, DEMEANING,DISREPECTFUL AND CARELESS. WHOEVER DID THE INTERVIEW AND WHOEVER ALLOWED THIS TO BE PUBLISHED SHOULD BE FIRED!!!! THIS IS A BLACK OWNED MAGAZINE AND THOSE QUESTIONS WAS STEROTYPE AND UNNECCASARY. THESE QUESTIONS WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ASKED TO A WHITE PERSON. YOUR INTERVIEW WAS TO PERSONAL AND INSTEAD OF GIVING THE WORLD SOMETHING BAD TO JUDGE T.I ON GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO PRAISE HIM FOR. THIS

THIS GUY HAVE DONE ALOT OF GOOD THINGS IN HIS LIFE AND TO ASK HIM IF HE CRIED WHEN HE LOST HIS BABY WAS ONE OF THE MOST NON -EMOTIONAL QUESTION I HAVE EVER HEARD. I REALLY SUPPORT BLACK OWNED MAGAZINES BUT I WOULD NEVER BUY THIS MAGAZINE AGAIN...I SUPPORT T.I!!!!!!!
