El DeBarge, leader of beloved Motown family act DeBarge, was arrested in
California on Sunday night on outstanding felony narcotics charges, according to an official from
the Lancaster, Calif. Police Department. The official said DeBarge, 46, was in court on
the charge yesterday, but would not reveal further details.
The charge is yet another in a series of disturbing turns for the
DeBarge family, a group that includes Marty, Randy, Mark, James, Thomas,
Bobby, baby brother Chico and sister Bunny.
VIBE's October issue features "Broken Dreams," an exclusive story about DeBarge's troubled past, written by Michael A. Gonzales.

I will have empathy for El and his family. His family been through so much and it's really sad that he's going through such an ordeal.
Hopefully, friends and family will talk to him about his destructive behavior and embrace him for he really is in time of need.

I have long since been a debarge fan. This truly breaks my heart to hear that el is in trouble. I pray that things get ok and that he can get his life back on track. He has always been so underrated in the music world he is so talented people just don't realize. I am truly stunned about this news and I pray he'll make it through. God is w/ you el just hang in there and god will walk beside you and give you the strength you need.

Oh Dawayne- so true, Heart, Mind, My Soul is one of the most excellent songs I have heard. I always had a crush on El and back in "95" I had a chance to meet him while working backstage with BET in Detroit; and then my boyfriend came to pick me up before I had a chance. LOL. I still regret that from time to time. But Yes, the Lord always delivers HIS. El and HIS family will make it through this and prayerfully surround himself with people who truely love him. I was heartbroken when I read the story in Vibe. I literally cried about Bobby. I am still proud of them all for who they are; they are a strong family. Luv, Tee

WHAT A SHOCKER! My favourite singer of all time, busted. I hope El kicks the habit. He still rocks! Speaking as an avid listnener of his music, I think he has god-given talent. He's what I jam out to on my stereo system and in my car. I still admire his god-given talent.

It's sad that things happen to any family especially a family as this one. Continue to believe in God and hold him first. This family will continue to be loved and blessed.

I hope that when El gets past this bad period in his life (periods that all human beings have), that Vibe will devote another article to this talented and extremely under rated singer. He is a living legend- and his family has contributed many classics to the industry. So I will be looking forward to seeing Vibe magazine stand behind El Debarge and his talented family- when they put out new music- and show the world that they are still a musical force to be reconged with!!!

I recently read your feature "Broken Dreams" by Michael Gonzales and was very disappointed. First because there are so many stories done on black artist regarding there drug abuse and maybe I was looking for one that really dealed with the artist, but this one kind of hit home. I worked with Switch for over 30 years! As White Heat and the TNT Flashers. I have watched over the years as person after person has stepped up to degrade both Switch and DeBarge and most for their own self advancement. I am not writing to tell a story but just to let you know that there is more out there. I spent more time in the studio with Bobby then anyone during the time he was with Switch and carried him in the house when he was too weak to get out of the car when he was with Greg Williams and I at our home in the last days. As I said I am not here to tell a story just my disappointment in Vibe to step up to the plate and tell a story and not just continue to perpetuate drug use by black artist.
