"The easiest thing for us to be is creative," Double O says. "We started getting a lot of records done, and with this we wanted to make sure we got it out to the people. We wanted to make sure we kept music in the marketplace."
Detention comes one year after the Chicago duo released their nostalgic Rawkus debut, School Was My Hustle. And, according to both Kidz, choosing Mick Boogie - who has worked with everyone from Little Brother's And Justus for All to Lil Wayne's The Carter 2 - was a no-brainer.
"Mick takes risks," Naledge says. "He's one of the main mixtape DJs we have championed, because he takes chances on music he generally likes. The project he did with Little Brother was kind of an album, and he reached out to us to do a similar thing. We're calling this an album instead of mixtape because it's real music, not just filler."
But besides trying to remain a memory in the short attention span of your average hip hop head, Kidz have other things to focus on - like pulling out of their choirboy, backpacker image, which have caused them to be labeled as, well, boring.
"Ok, I do carry granola bars in my pockets," Double O jokes. "I mean, we're regular people. Though we got sort of pigeonholed with our first single ["Wheelz Fall Off ('06 Til)], people are going to be pleasantly surprised with this mixtape."
Pleasantly surprised may be an understatement. One of the songs on the Dentention is called "Clothes, Hoes, and Liquor," which Double O explains is Naledge and his reminisces of growing up in Chicago.
"We've grown," Naledge says. "The everyday person has real issues. We definitely talk about trying to make it everyday, and even hugging the block. This record is going to introduce you to more."
Detention is set to be released September 25.
