The “Queen” of Soul calls B’s Grammy speech a “cheap shot”

The Grammy Awards went smoothly for Beyonce, who shimmied and slid her way across the stage with her “ultimate icon” Tina Turner. But according to Aretha Franklin, the former Destiny’s Child star has a lot to learn.

On Tuesday, Franklin dropped Knowles some ether, complaining in a statement that the singer got it twisted over who’s really the queen of soul. “I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce," Franklin said in a statement. "However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy."

Apparently, Franklin was turned off by Beyonce calling Tina Turner—whom she collaborated with at the Grammy Awards—“the queen.”

"There is one legend who has the essence of all of those things: the glamour, the soul, the passion, the strength, the talent," said Knowles, during her introduction of Turner. "Ladies and gentlemen, stand on your feet and give it up for the queen."

“In addition to that,” Franklin said later, “I thank the Grammys and the voting academy for my 20th Grammy and love Beyonce anyway."
