Actor convicted of willfully not paying taxes

The Associated Press has reported that a Florida federal judge has sentenced actor Wesley Snipes to three years in jail – one year for each year Snipes willfully did not file a tax return. Snipes’ total debt in taxes owed was $2.7 million, but lawyers for Snipes requested the actor only get probation because all three convictions were misdemeanors and he had no criminal history. The defense team also presented three dozen letters from family members and friends – including actors Denzel Washington and Woody Harrelson – to demonstrate Snipes’ good character.

Snipes’ acting career came to a stalemate in recent years, largely due to the public fall out over his most popular role as the hero Blade in the popular Blade (New Line) movie series. Some of his other notable roles were as Nino Brown in 1991’s New Jack City (Warner Bros) and Sidney Dean in 1992’s White Men Can’t Jump (20th Century Fox).
