The controversy over the title of Nas’s much anticipated ninth album has either come to a screeching halt or has been reignited. Last fall the rapper made the bold proclamation that his next album would be entitled Nigger; even showing up on the red carpet of the 2008 Grammys wearing a t-shirt with the word emblazoned on the front and back.
But EW.com is now reporting Nas will be changing the title of the album. Though many said executives from Nas’s record label Island Def Jam wouldn’t release the album with such a controversial title, chairman Antonio “L.A.” Reid issued a statement to the public saying, “We stand firmly behind and beside our artists with pride and with pleasure.”
Last week, Nas told MTV News he was still facing pressure to change the title. “Everybody is trying to stop the title…Record stores are gonna have a problem in this day and time selling a record with that title.”
As of press time, no new title has been set. The as-yet-to-be-titled album is slated for release on July 1.
