Pleads guilty to charges in federal court

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will resign immediately Thursday after pleading guilty to felony charges in a sex scandal. His sentence will include four months of jail time and a fine of $1 million.

In all, Kilpatrick faced 10 felony counts in two separate criminal cases. The mayor’s plea was for a perjury and misconduct case. Kilpatrick pleaded no contest to the second one, an assault case.

Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner asked Kilpatrick if the mayor understood by pleading he was giving up his right to be innocent until proven guilty. “I gave that up a long time ago,” Kilpatrick replied.

Dubbed by many as “the hip hop mayor”, Kilpatrick was the face of the country’s 11th largest city since his first term began in 2002. At the time he was elected, he was 31-years-old and the youngest person ever to serve as mayor. But over the last seven-months, the controversy surrounding Kilpatrick has given the city of Detroit’s political scene a black eye.

The mayor will be sentenced on October 28. His resignation will become effective in two weeks time.
