Independent MC joins Sire Records/Warner Music Group

Los Angeles rapper Blu recently inked a record deal with Warner Music Group's Sire Records. The news of his signing was first mentioned in a recent Los Angeles Times article and was confirmed by Blu’s manager, Jonathan Kim today.

Known for his conversational flow and storytelling lyrics, Blu’s signing to Sire/Warner Music Group can primarily be attributed to the rapper’s strong Internet following, which VIBE documented in the August 2008 issue (INDEPENDENT). The underground MC has released several independent albums to critical acclaim including the 2007 cult-classic Below the Heavens (Sound In Color) produced by DJ Exile. More recently, Blu released a free mixtape on February 15, entitled HerFavoriteColo(u)r. Many fans attribute the recent West Coast rap renaissance to Blu’s success, and at one point, Suge Knight, the notorious former head of legendary gangster-rap label Death Row, was reportedly even interested in signing Blu.

As of press time, Blu was unavailable for comment. His major label debut is slated for a fall release.
