Thom Yorke and Doom: (Underground) Radio Head

Don’t know Yorke? Get familiar!

Aiight, so let’s make this one quick – that’s how you folks like it out here on these Internets, right? Just got wind that Thom Yorke, the frontman for the innovative British group, Radiohead, remixed a record on DOOM’s upcoming project, Born Like This (Lex), due out later this month. The record is “Gazill,” and just in case you aren’t familiar with Yorke, here are a couple of joints to get you in the DOOM mood (Ha! Get it? It’s an anagram! Eesh). Anyhow, you might also know Yorke ’cause he got Kanye’s La Perla panties in a bunch following a perceived snub backstage at the Grammy’s last month – Yorke makes art rock for real, Kanye loves art, Kanye loves Yorke (not in that way, lames – and for the record, Yeezy prolly doesn’t wear panties, but if he did they’d prolly be Perla, or Cavalli), and truth be told, if Yorke was making rap music all the time it’d prolly sound a lot like Kanye’s 808’s & Heartbreak (Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam). So there ya go. Enjoy.

Thom Yorke, “The Clock” from The Eraser (XI Recordings, 2006)
A record off of Yorke’s solo project. Yorke made all of the music, wrote the lyrics, the whole deal. Kanye’s 808 has The Eraser running all through its veins.

Radiohead, “Myxomatosis (Judge, Jury and Executioner)” from Hail to the Thief (Capitol, 2003)
A heavy-hitting record off of Radiohead’s heavy-handedly-titled response to the Bush Administration. There isn’t a ton of music out there that sounds like this. (And if there is, holler!) Respect that.

Radiohead,  “Videotape,” from In Rainbows (Ato Records/Red, 2008)
The existential crisis that closes Radiohead’s most recent album, which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Album (and lost to Coldplay – people, get over Chris Martin, please, just ’cause he’s British and Jay-Z fucks with him don’t make him not corny) and initially available for free on the Internets ’cause Radiohead’s just innovative like that. (This album was a sleeper hit at the VIBE office, too.)
