Antonia Carter, Lil Wayne's Ex-Wife, Speaks (Part 1)

After reading the Lil Wayne cover story in VIBE's November 2007 issue, Antonia "Toya" Carter, Lil Wayne's ex-ife, wanted to give her side of the story. In the first part of this exclusive Q&A, she speaks about their history. She also loaned us a whole gang of photos - which seem to show they did have love, if only for a time - which we'll be publishing here on vibe.com over the next few days. Queen Latifah: The House that Queen Built

Since debuting in 1989 with the Monie Love duet "Ladies First," Queen Latifah has created an empire. The hip hop pioneer's first album was confidently titled All Hail the Queen; since then, she's cultivated a career as an Oscar nominee, Covergirl model and A-List Hollywood celebrity.

In 2007, the Grammy winner added two commercially successful, critically acclaimed films: the musical Hairspray, and Life Support, a thought-provoking film about HIV/AIDS in the black community. Now, she's returning to music with Travel'n' Light, which hit stores yesterday (September 25). A collection of covers from the most legendary jazz artists of our time, this is the Queen's second vocal album, showcasing a cool fusion of jazz and soul.

With a passion in her voice, Latifah spoke with VIBE.com about her new album, her frustrations about the current state of hip-hop, the ignored legacy of female rappers and much more. Introducing L-A-T - a must-read interview for anyone who values the hip hop history.... (read more)

Alicia Keys, "No One" (video)

A. Keys killed this synthy-piano love-lullaby from her new album - some of which we've heard, and is a departure from her earlier work - poppier but as pretty as ever. We love the chameleonic costume changes she makes happen in this video for "No One," which debuted last night on BET. What do you think of it all?... (read more)

From dating Latoya and Janet Jackson to allegations of sexual abuse and drug addiction - the DeBarge family has dealt with everything from prison time to AIDS. Mya, "Ridin" (video)

We are loving, loving, loving this video/track from Mya's forthcoming album. A paean to a woman done way wrong, and obsessed with driving past her dude's house, threatening to find his sorry cheating self and take him down. She's about to get SERIOUS. The flaming silhouettes and hotel montage help. LOL at the dude's expression when he  answers the hotel room door and finds our girl at the helm.... (read more)

Kanye Besting 50 in Album Sales

Graduation is ahead of Curtis in the great album-sales / race to save hip hop head-to-head of '07. An early report from Nielsen soundscan says West is presently poised to pull 575,000 to 700,000 in sales, where 50 is expected to do only about 550,000 - the equivalent of country artist Kenny Chesney's predicted sales. It's looking bad for the man who said he'd quit hip hop if West beat him (to be fair, 50 later told Hot 97 that if West beat him, he would release a new album every time  a Def Jam artist dropped).... 50 vs. Kanye: Healthy Competition

What's beef?

50 Cent and Kanye West insist that, despite their much-anticipated release-date rivalry, they aren't really beefing - and that this whole fake war has been hot for hip hop. But whys, wheres and whos aren't what the business is. We all know it's about who, ultimately, takes home the title. Now that's hip hop.
So here's the evidence - a timeline of the beef and a few songs to stream. After weighing the evidence, we want to know: who will emerge the victor? You tell us.... (read more)

Foxy Brown Slapped with a Year

On Friday, a more than three-months-pregnant Foxy Brown was slapped with a year in Riker's for violating probation relating to her fight with her manicurist in NYC three years ago. It was the unfortunate climax to a series of scuffles - including the alleged glue-throwing in a Florida beauty shop, and the alleged cell-slapping of a woman in Brooklyn - that finally pushed Criminal Court Judge Melissa Jackson to the limit. "I'm not going to give you any more chances," she told Foxy at the hearing. "I hope you turn your life around and never again have to stand in a court of law."... (read more)

Sierra Leone's Refugee All-Stars: Q&A

Sierra Leone was entrenched in a brutal civil war for much of the '90s and into the early '00s. So as bling was coined and celebrated, blood was let in one of the most diamond-rich countries of the world. Q-Tip memorably pulled Kanye West's couture coattail to the conflict in 2005 resulting in the titular reference on Late Registration's lead single "Diamonds from Sierra Leone," but the same year three filmmakers' documentary chronicle of the travails of some resilient and unimaginably industrious refugee musicians captured the film festival circuit. This film, Sierra Leone's Refugee All-Stars, found musician Reuben Koroma and makeshift band tending to his fellow refugees psychic well being through music. With the help of the filmmakers the All-Stars even recorded an album, Living Like a Refugee (2006), in the civil war's wake. The documentary and album has touched a nerve in the west and the All-Stars have toured steadily to broadcast their message of peace and afro-reggae musicianship.... (read more)
