The official launch of "One Mind. One Vote," takes place at ABC's "Good Morning America" studio Monday, Jan. 19, commemorating the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday with a special broadcast session on the upcoming election and live performances from some of today's hottest superstars.
"The plan is to use Hip Hop personalities to get to the people," said Charles Fisher, HSAN's chairman To which Banks added, "and to push down people's throat how important it is to vote."
Simmons brother, Joseph, better known as Rev. Run or Run of Run DMC fame, is lending his celebrity to the Network's cause.
HSAN plans to register 2 million voters in 2004 with the help of hip hop. The nonpartisan organization, led by Dr. Benjamin Chavis and Russell Simmons, has been supported by hip hop luminaries such as Jay-Z, Beyonce, Ludacris, LL Cool J, P. Diddy, and Damon Dash, among many others.
In an article entitled "Compassionate Capitalism," that appeared in today's edition of The Village Voice, writer Ta-Neshi Coates quotes Simmons, " When Puffy says register to vote, maybe people will do it. The most important thing we gotta do is make it cool to show up at the rallies, make it in style to pay attention."
When asked whether he is backing any politician in the upcoming election, Banks shook his head assertively and stated, "I'm about backing the people to vote, that's all I want to do." And, that is what "One Mind. One Vote," the partnership between he, Russell Simmons and HSAN are working toward.
ABC Radio Networks' DBMS has the potential to reach more than 2 million listners a day with this campaign, which includes weekly features on potential presidential candidates, as well as informative segments and on-air discussions urban youth related issues. There will also be voter registrations booths during the 2004 Doug Banks Jam Session concert tour.
