My Baby's Daddy: More Burps Than Laughs

Imagine a pimped out version of the 80’s baby-raising comedy Parenthood or maybe a ghetto fabulous reincarnation of the corny but cute classic Three Men and a Baby. My Baby’s Daddy offers a modern day glimpse at fatherhood through the glossy, bloodshot eyes of comedian Edd

"It changes your life," confides Griffin. "But a lot of guys think it ends your life. I wanted to write a film about that shock, about that craziness, but also about the incredible ways a guy can change when he goes from acting like a grown-up little boy to becoming a real man and taking care of responsibility." The hilarious father of two decided to turn his diaper changing memories into a movie about the terror and magic of first time fatherhood. It only took Griffin and screenwriter/lyricist Damon "Coke" Daniels about a month to write the script. "We've seen the Cosby dads with the perfect wife and children-nobody smokes weed," jokes the movie's cowriter/producer and star, Eddie Griffin. "But nobody's ever seen the hip hop generation being fathers. There's this perception that generation x dads are deadbeat dads, who aren't there, locked up or whatever. This is a comedy about my generation and how we deal with being dads." With Griffin's signature antics and funnyman Anderson's heavy-handed humor, My Baby's Daddy promises not to skimp on the laughs. For the Kangaroo Jack star, teaming up with his comedic comrade was the greatest incentive for doing the film. "Eddie was the real reason I signed on to do this project because of the potential of what we could do together as comedians," admits Anderson. "Throw in Method Man and the chemistry between us really pops." "We've been talking about doing a movie since we worked together on Malcolm and Eddie," agrees Griffin. "When you've got two retarded people who ride the short bus together, all you have to do is turn on the camera." My Baby's Daddy follows three young, carefree wannabe macs, who simultaneously discover that they've all gotten their girls' pregnant at the same time. Together the roommates come to grips with fatherhood and all that embodies their new roles. "It's the story of these three men-or boys," laughs Anderson, real-life father of four, "becoming men and how their relationships change and grow because of they're children." I have yet to peep My Baby's Daddy but based on it's box office success, I'll be sporting Depends when I do check it out. Although it remained in the top ten for two weeks, grossing over $16 million to date, I'm not expecting comedic brilliance-just the sort of soda-spewing laughter Griffin usually inspires. According to critics, the script not only relies on the cast's chemistry but also resorts to exploiting tired stereotypes for cheap chuckles. If you'd rather drop ten on a sack than a movie ticket, hold out for the DVD. Something tells me that the outtakes might be even funnier than the movie!
