Man. This week's been like an avalanche of bad entertainment news. Can black folks in the industry, scratch that, can black folks everywhere, please stay out of trouble? If you need an incentive to stay square, look at your boy Suge Knight. He's been court ordered to pay a woman more than $100 million dollars for axing her from her rightful place beside him at the helm of Death Row Records. This set down comes not long after he spent 10 months in the bink on a parole violation for knocking a Hollywood valet upside the head. Shyne, whose $3 million will remain just out of reach until he settles a civil suit. C-Murder, who tried and failed in his latest attempt to get a second-degree murder conviction dismissed. He plans to appeal to Louisiana's Supreme Court, and while he's doing that, brothers Master P and Silkk tha Shocker will try and convince a jury they're not guilty of carrying unregistered, loaded guns. Why did they get pinched? You guessed it, routine traffic stop. Their leased car didn't have license plates. Lord, have mercy! What exactly is the problem here? Doesn't everybody, like from birth, know that a faulty car situation is the easiest and most assured way for "the man" to catch you? Especially if you're a black man and a hip hop celebrity. Come on. It's ridiculous that people who have like two assistants a piece, can't remember minor little details like plates and stickers and licenses when they're driving around in extremely expensive cars all frickin' day! Now that Johnnie Cochran has passed, leaving a tangible legacy behind, who's even gonna defend these nut balls when they screw up? There is a bright spot on the horizon, and I'm not talking about The Game's acting debut in this summer's MTV flick "The Millionaire Boys Club," God save us. Nor Jadakiss' probation gift, having marijuana and gun possession charges dropped under a plea agreement reached in Cumberland County court. We'll see if he can stay out of trouble for the next three months and make it happen. The bright light comes, of course, from my fair Midwestern city. Chicago's own Bump J, aka Terrence Boykin, who I ran into at a listening party at "The Office," headquarters for Jaquar Entertainment. In a sea of repetitive criminal intents, he, at least, seems to have learned from his past. BJ, as I've decided to call him, believes in God, in fate, and the power of the multi-hyphenate. He shared some of his plans with me when we managed to dodge the throngs of folk he travels with, and find a quiet nook over Canal Street to talk over the past, and current crazy romantic troubles.
