The Fugees vs. The Black Eyed Peas

Email this article Print this article Send us a tip

We decided to compare the eclectic b-boys and their fly girls, and determine once and for all who really rocks harder.

Hip Hop Credibility: While the Peas gulliness is well documented (i.e. that never aired episode of Punk'd where they beat down Ashton's crew for a joke gone awry), the Fugees have won this round since their inner turmoil is more noteworthy than any beat down the Peas could offer. (FUGEES)

The Look: Even though the Fugees damn near coined the term Hobo-chic with their avant-garde refugee styled flavor, the Peas took things a step further by adding a bona-fide fashionista, with Heatherette doll Fergie. (PEAS)

The Vocals: Sure the Peas have given us some snappy ditties to stock our iPods for endless hours, but how many of us can name the exact place and time we first heard Lauryn wail "Killing Me Softly?" (FUGEES)

Legendary Music: While the Peas are as ubiquitous as a 50 Cent fued with anybody, the Fugees have given us one of the most popular hip hops albums of all time with The Score. (FUGEES)

Weak Links: Outside of Will.I.Am and the newly added Fergie, those other two Peas are instantly forgettable. But they can't hold a candle to the truly untalented Pras, who surprisingly has made a career out of producing albums and movies that most skip. (PEAS)

Femme Fatale: Sure the Peas' Fergie single handedly made them media darlings by creating a buzz and igniting sex appeal. Lauryn is just so foxie and full of moxie, which explains her numerous Grammy awards and a flow that every female rapper around envies. (FUGEES)

The Score: Fugees 4 , Black Eyed Peas 2

The Fugees win. Despite the Peas' innovation, the Fugees manage to be one large step ahead.

Obviously the fugees win, they have cross over appeal, their lyrics are thought provoking (political substance) and they have defied all odds by staying true to themselves. To me they are legends and their music will be remembered for generations. They Peas are just too colourful with no musical substance i cannot even remember anything intelligent about their songs.

I LOVED THE OLE TO THE FUGEES BY ANTI-PRAS BUT WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE WHEN HE GAVE CREDIT TO HIPHOP STANDING TO WYCLEF, L-BOGGIE AND DIRTY CRASH. I WAS BROUGHT TO THIS PEEK ALMOST SINGLE HANDEDLY BY RUSSELL SIMMONS AND ALSO ANDRE HARRELL. YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE THE IMPACT THAT THESE TWO PUT ON HIPHOP. ANDRE FROM A OLD RAP GROUP HIS SELF HAS ALWAYS KEPT HIS HAND IN THE HIPHOP POT AND WAS THE REASON WHY PUFFY IS BADBOY. WHILE WHO CAN SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT RUSSELL THE BADDEST OF THE BADDEST, BADBOYS.

Yo Honestly I can't stand Pras, but after reading this article, I started wondering if the Fugees would have been what they are without this dude's voice. I mean who doesnt remember who doesn't remember his punch lines. "Drinks at the bar My American Express" " I autograph my lyrics with my number two pencil"
"Like Farakan" "walk in your Hood with a million motherf**kers" Yo this kid had words, it's just I hated the fact my girl couldn't wait to hear his deep voice, and he seemed bored while making great music. Like the sh*t came easy. Really though this dude had us waiting for him to come in like we were watching a double dutch competition.

I don't even see how the Black Eye Peas are in this conversation, I can't remember one things they said. The hood is not bumpin Black Eye Peas. C'mon just Pras takes them out the Box, I can't believe y'all got me defending Pras, but I honestly think he can take them out. His Ghetto Supastar was like nuber three on the Charts, none of the members other than Fergie could hope to do that. Yo are Y'all serious? Whoever came up with this comparison should be checked for foreing substances. I mean c'mon between Clef and Lauryn there is like a Fort Knox Vault of Grammy's and all sorts of Diamond Placques, you right now Lauryn Hill is bugged out and she still Kills what's that girls name again on that other group. Look I'm going to do you one better, The Fugees recently said boo and got on Billboards for a major corporate entity named VERIZON, how much more comercial appeal can you have. Look face it the Fugees have the hood, the corporations, the clout, the music, they are legends in the game. All these rappers right now would not be where they are if it was not for Wyclef, L-Boggie, and Dirty Cash. They are not just Hip-Hop but Music Royalty, and the FUGAZIE other group should BOW DOWN!!!!!!

I would definitely put my money on the Fugees, I love what they represent they sold more than 20 million copies for the score without being too commercial (this includes their videos, simple dress sense, and they have a female singer who was naturally beautiful and sexy, did not portray sex gimmick images to be recognised or accepted. They were street smart and intelligent this was evident in their lyrical content they were young black Americans who did not care about the glitz and glamour they were concerned about real life issues (socially and politically) and they wanted to make a difference and to change the world with their music. They embraced their roots and stayed true to themselves. MUCH LOVE TO THE FUGEES.

The Fugees

Wyclef – Multitalented a world class rapper, singer, producer and song writer and street smart and well informed about global issues. Even if he is not involved in music he can do other things as well because he is truly gifted and very charming. .

Pras – He might look like an extra of the Fugees but I love his rap style its mesmerising he brings a different flavour in the whole group. His presence is felt in the group, he has a great personality and he is such a prolific rapper.

Lauryn Hill – Multitalented, street smart, intelligent, have natural beauty, I love her style because she has that simple glamour that ordinary people can relate to, her presence symbolises hope, courage and wisdom. She has a beautiful spirit which truly a gift from God. She is definitely on the top of my list of female singers and my no 1 female rapper so intellectual and classy.

Their Music – Very rich in content and very intellectual, politically, socially and educationally aware, aware of global issues, humanitarians, their music is classical,
timeless and original. They are versatile as a group due to what they represent. I would rather put my money on them because they have so much to offer. They have done one of the most classic hip hop album in music history, definitely no group can replace the fugees period. We will still talking about them in years to come.

William – Multitalented a world class rapper, producer and song writer. He is also gifted.

The other 2 male members – I don’t even know their names all I remember is that they have a crazy dress sense and they are forever making a whole hell of noise.

Fergie – She can sing but she does not have much to offer she is just sexy siren. Same as other Hollywood chicks ignorant and no clue of what is happening around the world.

Their Music – Innovative but not classic, I can dance to their songs now but I am definitely sure I won’t be grooving to their songs in 20 years to come. I see them as too commercial, too fashionable with less anything profound to offer.

the fugees music is classic the black eyed peas are too commercial and glamorous for me. The fugees beat the black eyed peas in terms of lyrical content, production of the songs, creativity, and how they have potrayed themselves as a politically and socially conscious hip hop group. A love the black eyed peas fashion sense but i still insist we need quality timeless music. As for comparing Fergie to Lauryn we dont even want to go there. Lauryn is in a class of her own too way above any popular female artist today. William and Wyclef are both talented as producers and artists. the other 2 from the black eyed peas i evn forget them. Pras might look like an extra on the fugees but he is a great rapper and very versatile he has got more presence than the other 2 members of the black eyed peas
