50 vs. Kanye: May the Illest Jaw Win

Email this article Print this article Send us a tip

50 cent states that Kanye West is prominent because he's the anti 50. Although both MC's are known for being their own best publicist, this time it seems 'Half a dollar' may actually be on to something. In this age of hip hop, most artists can't complete an album without guest appearances from half of New York (and parts of Houston), despite all of the dubious pairings in recent history one pairing we could never imagine would be Kanye and 50. So in honor of keeping shit going, VIBE.com pits Time's cover boy against G.Q.'s and lets the readers decide. Hip Hop Credibility:
It's no secret that in order to move units in hip hop - something horrific has to happen to create a buzz. With Kanye, it was a career igniting car accident that left his jaw a bit ajar - but with a hit single. But it's 50's iconic 9 bullets that made him get rich, and almost die trying. Who’s got this one? 50 The Look:
The bulked up G-Unit soldier is rarely seen in video clips without his designer uniform of spaghetti strapped wife beaters and G-Unit jeans. Meanwhile Kanye's iconic fashion sense, (everything from lush designer suits to chic polo's) makes his style less ashy and more classy. Who’s got this one? Kanye right The Vocals:
Although neither are fodder for an MC top 10 list, both have an incredible knack for scoring billboard hits. While 50 loves to extol the values of money, hoes, and beef - its Kanye's conscience barbs about the diamond trade in Africa, American politics, and dating gold-diggers that make him more than the rapper of the moment. Who’s got this one? Kanye The Hustle:
It's no secret that 50's either a marketing genius or a gimmick whore. With his brands of shoes, apparel, vitamin drinks, video games, porn prosthetics, and films, he's likely to burn out by the time his movie leaves the box office. But it's Kanye's knack for carving out hits for rappers like Common & Jay-Z to R&B icons like Janet Jackson & Alicia Keys that will keep him relevant long after his hip hop shelf life expires. Who’s got this one? Kanye Pimp Juice:
Sure, 50's been linked to a revised Vivica A. Fox, but that's not saying much after she 'dropped it like a salt shaker' for Lil' Jon (remember the BET Awards). And while Olivia's a cute addition to G-Unit, honestly she bores us. Despite not having a female member in his crew, Kanye will forever be lauded as the guy who made a music video (All Fall's Down) that was essentially about Stacey Dash's ass – priceless. Who’s got this one? Kanye Entourage:
Although Kanye runs with some of the industry's most prolific power players (i.e. Jaime Foxx, John Legend and Common), 50's G-Unit is almost legendary at this point. There's Olivia's sex appeal, the henchmen Young Buck & Lloyd Banks, and the grimy addition of Mobb Deep. But the coup for 50 was landing Murder Mase (i.e. Pastor Mase) who actually should be chilling on the side of Jesus with Kanye, but were sure the devil pays better. Who’s got this one? 50 The Score:
50 - 2
Kanye - 4 Kanye wins. Despite 50’s innovation, Kanye manages to be one large step ahead. Agree or Disagree? Click here to comment.

Mark my words Kanye will fall off in a little while because he really get under people skin, he thinks he's better than everybody. Listen to his Big Brother song, he even tries to go up against the person he thinks is his idol. He's going down, watch!

If you look back at the overall concensus of the two artist more people are Pro fiddy and Less Kanye, and if you are a real man you difinitely like 50 better. I'm looking back over every post and most people are posting against Kanye and believe what I believe and that is that Kanye is B!tchy.

I've listened trough both of their albums and I got to say that Kanye's album is something that you can listen on-and-on without skiping a track here and there. 50 Cent's album on the other hand has only few tracks that are really worth listening.

Also when you compare the singles that two of them have released to promote their albums - Kanye has been stronger in that as well. Not only have it managed to get the hip-hop heads attention, it has also got the attention of the mainstream public.

If your group has young "BUCK"
Lloyds "BANK"
50 "CENTS"
Then your persona is probably "MONEY" so why would it be strange for fiddy to rap about money, and what money loves. Cash Money always rap about money in the same fashion. If you come out political then you have a responsibility to remain in that fasion, But it's all ENTERTAINMENT.

You don't have to be mature to listen and learn.

Kanye's album is way better then fiftys. fifty is gunna have to start writing his retirement speech. every song kanye has is a good song and 50's songs are just hoes and guns so be mature and listen to kanye, or listen to 5 year old fifty cent

You know im a big fan of 50 AND kanye and i bought both as soon as they came out, and i from what i heard 50 has 2 or 3 good songs (other then the 6 everyone knows amusement park, fully loaded clip, ayo technology, straight to the bank, i get money, and follow my lead) and then he has that garbage one with nicole whatshername from PCD

Kanye on the other hand has a lot of good songs, not so nearly as addicting but better listening music and i really feel what kanye has to say lyric wise cause all 50 does is say "AYO MAN I GOT POPPED 9 TIMES AND I F**K HOES AND I SELL DRUGS" i mean get real people it gets overdone by too many people

If he is telling the truth Master P says he sold out over and over again by selling directly through Walmart and if that is true for washed out rapper and his son then it's double true for Paps, and I.T. but on a brighter note I they negotiate a contract with a large label after having a large fan base then they have to make a hell of alot more and get alot more creative freedom. That comes from doing your work first. That's why 50 and Kanye, Paul Wall and Em all came in with there own styles and made high dollar from the beginning. They was already buzzing.

I was hoping an artist like Papoose could make ghis own way withouthaving to sign a large deal with one of the established labels. Guys like him and Immortal Technique have enough fan base that they can produce package and market straight to the people. They mat not sell 5 mill, but when you sell 5 mill and only make a small amount per unit moved you do just as good selling 500,000 financially speaking.

I remember the buzz on the internet about 50 when he was real. He had just dropped wansta and had folks respecting him from all corners, then came that second album trash that shocked me, I didn't think he, Em, and Dre could of make gabage like that, they did better on games album. Anyway we need some new juice maybe papoose can make a difference since he's getting a large record deal.

That's true Nez but real Hop Heads know what it is, it always had some commercial BS lurking in the background waiting to take center stage but as soon as some real Sh#t come out the world wake up.

Thats kind of sad. There are going to be millions of people that are going to buy these two CD's and they they are listening quality rappers, good Hip Hop. When in actuality are they are getting is well marketed entertainment. nothing wrong with that, but don't taint the pool for real Hip Hop heads by changing what was to what you want it to be because many don't want to understand what the culture and music are really about.

Since you put it that way, you may wanna hold up Neza, Neither of them is worth our dollar but if your gonna like a album it's probably gonna be fiddy's. In my opinion I think fiddy used Kanye recipe for sucess but did it way better this album. I love Kanye play on words as well and his production ability but when you think about it he doesn't have songs you can remember except golddigger.
but Neither of them really is good enough for me. I prefer Dipset and Naz, Common, and Talib Kweli and mos def, personally. The emcees that's keeping it real.

In response to Poostanka,

I will have to do that. It would have to be a remarkable improvement over what I have heard from 50 previously. He just doesn;t have the kind of songs that make me want to flow with him as I listen to it. Kanye doesn't either but at leasthis word play is amusing time to time and he says clever stuff more often. Honestly neither are rappers that I have heard on line from that makes you wanna say,"uuhh, you hear what he said," feel me. But since all the hype is around them now I will listen for myself and see whassup. I am waitimg for Budden to drop Mood Muzik 3 so I can hear a good emcee flow.

Yeah I have to admit it too, I tried not to be bais, and I don't like that gansta S#@%. but really when you listen to both albums 50's is better. The reason Kanye was doing better because we just assumed that Kanye would have the best, and Fiddy fell down with that last cd. So everyone go buy Kanye and after a day or so knows he just have about two or three hits, hardly enough to go buy a cd for.

in response to Shabaz

You didn't say anything right about 50, first of all his movie scored #1 and is water sold like 34 million and his clothing line does well but his second album fell off alot.

but to Neza I'm listening to the two albums and really 50 is better. He has more content in this one then in the last album and Kanye isn't doing it for me. Kanye is for easy listening when your home alone at night, but Fiddy is bumping. You should go get the two and you will see. Kanye fans have to admit 50 has a better album.
Kanye is album is good for the first couple of days but dies out quickly, believe me you won't remember this one next year.

29.

Shabaz Kazia says:

Kanye and 50 go head to head but the outcome is obvious 50 played out effort has its limit he tries so hard to make top dollor with his g-unit clothing brand (that no one likes) vitamin water and he came out with his stupid boring to death movie and game about his amazing story about getting shot 9 times 50 be lucky your alive if it happens again yu wont be so lucky.
With lyric purity and good music kanye's got a sure win plus he know how to make money being a record producer he dosent have to commercially sell him self out to make some money

30.

Neza says:

Poo, I would not make that judgement yet. Right now I think we see 50 fans(that don't like Kanye) going for 50's CD and Kanye's fans(who don't like 50) going for Kanye's CD. The two styles don't mix so it's hard or me to tell just by comments from fans of each artist. What I would like to see is a review by a fan of both artists who is impartial and say which rapper has the better CD. Right now in the reviews on Amazon Kanye is killing 50, but that probably doesn't mean much from what I said earlier.

Any fans of both rappers out there that can decide which is the better CD?

To top that off he do nothing to back even that up. He should be more like David Banner who at least put his heart into helping those effected by Katrina.

Melissa and Neza I said yesterday that I would chose Kanye if he had the better CD. and it seems that the it was going his way but now I'm finding that although Kanye is out selling fiddy right now the Consensus is that Fiddy has the better album when compared by the listener. So I guess I'd would go buy Fiddy's.

40.

DaTruth says:

Here's where 50 messed up, he said "if his album don't out sale Kanye in the first week he'd retire." What he should of said if his album don't out sale Kanye's he'd retire. Because fiddy will out sale Kanye but not in this first week. Kanye's album sounds good at first but later dwindles, it's the hooks that get you, but 50's doesn't sound as good at first then rapidly grows on you. So in the interum between these albums 50 will go on to out sale based on the whole of the album. I see why he's so sure of its sucesss, it's really a well produced album with lots of goodies. Way better than that last bull$h!t.

I hope now that you've listened to both albums now you know who's the best. The final analysis is that Kanye has a good album but 50 has a great album. He has giving us everything we want on one album and it good to the bone. On the other hand Kanye has a couple of good songs but it's not enough to go toe to toe with 50's that's why he moved his date to 50's release to get the hype started and you fell for it.

If i was at the crib wishin life was better i would put in kanye's album. 5o said it best "my momma made a baby boy the hood made a Man". I like kanye but it does't seem like his voice goes with his beats on this album. His presence isn't strong enough for the beats. Support Kanye but this album is NOT A CLASSIC. You'll forget about the album after a month. But you'll here songs from 50's album for a while.

Don't fall for the hype. Your listening to Kanyes album because he is a great producer. Can we get some lyrics with those hooks. Just give the beats to jay or lil wayne to murder. Or just keep lettin the beat ride and throw two or three words in every 16 bars like you do.

Ayo, i think they both came pretty nice with these albums..so of their best currently no doubt. But Kanye seems less bent on saling albums on more on being just Kanye. 50 is about his money. Granted none of that matters but is all comes down on what u feeling more, some gangsta love tracks we could get from fab, or some well chopped fresh hits we could get from common.

Access Hollywood reports that Kanye West will perform at this Sunday's (Sept. 16) Emmy Awards in a spoof of music competition shows with "The Office" star Rainn Wilson.

Representatives for both parties refused to give further details on the scheduled performance.

In other Kanye West news, Billboard is reporting that Kanye West sold over 430,000 copies of his new album "Graduation" during its first day in stores. His sales rival 50 Cent moved just over 300,000 copies.

The one day total indicates that Kanye West will debut at #1 next week with around 700,000 of his new album "Graduation" sold.

For the first time, I'm in total agreement with you, but understand why. One hiphop is no longer street music, It's an industry now and industry people has to get into it and make money. Before you can switch from bad boy rap to love stuff to political and never miss a beat in sales but today if you start of in ganstadem you best stay in ganstadom. If you're lollipop u better stay lollipop. Look at Hammer when he tried to go gansta. Will smith couldn't convince anyone he's gansta, and now Murder Mace trying to transfer over to Ganstadom, it's not working. We want what the media says you are. If you suppose to be hardcore and gritty, you better go to jail or get shot. What people should say is that it has gotten out of hand. R.I.P. Proof - A prime example.

62.

Neza says:

I never liked him from the jump, but I always give artists a fresh chance with new music to see if they have grown. 50 never did IMO. He does have two songs I kinda dig (Hate It Or Love It and Many Men.) True rap is still growing but is money more important then content, is style and image more important then the music itself. Read back through what most of the people who have posted have said about why they like or don't like either artist, most of it had little to do with the music.

63.

poostanka says:

Member Name

I must say this, 50 do not have the power to single handedly foul up hiphop. True he's washing up, but you have to give him props for his stay. He did have songs like in the club that made him a classic, but where he messed up was that he called out jarule for lollipop rapping then he himself did it. The other thing is he tried to launch his self off Tupac fame like Ja rule did. Rap is still growing and will be here for years to come but fiddy made right under jayz last year and now with the sale of his vitamin water he may out rank him this year, with that said I predict this is his last good year and Kanye still has many in him. I give credit where it is due but fiddy used to be good his mixtape joints created a buzz that got him on Dre's label that was a feat in itself. I know you never liked him so you never gave his music a chance where as I've giving Kanye a chance and admire what he do.

Melissa I said I wouldn't post anymore but so that you know, I'm fair to the one with the best album and from the response of the Media Kanye has the best. I admire him to a small extent because of his creativity but what I don't like is his Cockiness and that he thinks he's teaching me something, but he can't he don't know enough yet. He may sprout off about Political injustices but where are his answers.
Me or you can tell the world whats wrong with it but that can't change anything. Bottom line is he should stick to making good music and producing which he do very well and leave the politics for the ones that know how to change it. (my opinion)

66.

Neza says:

Im not pro either fa real, but I do think Kanye has more talent and depth then 50. I never liked 50 since the first time I heard him on a mixtape back in the late 90's and thought top myself, dudes lik ethsi will ruin Hip Hop, he has mediocre talent and is fishing for a gimmick that will sell on a mass appeal level(gangstarr, remember that.) Neither Kanye or 50 can compare to KRS, Chuck D or Prof X I was just giving you some background on the different types of Hip Hop I was coming from aside from gangsta rap.

You vcan hate on Kanye ll you want for being a b*tch, but he raps whats on his mind and not just a hooks crook rapper like 50. Im not a Kanye fan but he has some songs I know and can rap along to, the entire song. The 50 fans I know when it comes to knowing more then the hook they are lost, i.e. 50 killing real Hip Hop.

A Dime piece is a dime piece but you're more like a nik, thinking u got game but u ain't $h!t, but you might be gay since you like his D!c% so when he promote that bull$h!t go get u a lick, B!tcH time is awaisting with your pretty A@s mouth, with lips like that you must be from the South. It really doesn't matter he'll take you like you are, gang banged and stubburn, in the back of his car. you video vixen u.

I'm not refering to the car accident. He's had struggle's of being accepted by people who assume that you have to grow up as this manly man, this hood or whatever else. He has real talent, he's an artist in every sense of the word. He can draw, he can create, he knows art and is much wiser than 50. Music is an ART not a 50 cent gimmick. And i'm pretty sure that he has had finacial problems and struggles.

aight stanky you hood you gangsta and your also ignorant. Im 28 from MD aka murdaland. I would be ashamed to say I was 27 and post the stuff you put up. The ghetto got your mind trapped, that the difference between you and I. I lived it and escaped above it, you live it and are proud of it. I bet you gotta a burner on you right now in case somebody step on your shoes so you can smoke them, real good mentality brotha. i grew up on hardcore rap to, but I also grew up on socially conscious rap like PE and X-Clan, party rap and lyrical rap and any other branch of rap there has been. Do you remember horrorcores? probably not. So I am all around Hip Hop, you just want to be known as a dude that grew up on gangsta rap, what an achievement.

He didn't struggle he had one bad car accident and decided to exploit that because he had nothing else at the time. He maybe creative as I've said a hundred times but he is a gimmick just like 50 and to prove it he moved his album date to rival 50's date. (go to foxnew.com) Now again for little wissy Neza, your panties are tied up your as# so tight you don't have nothing serious to post that would make a dime worth of S*&%. I'm 27 and from Harlem, 127 street, and I moved to the Bronx, right off Boston rd. on Fairmont ave. I'm from the heart of the Ghetto and you're from Orange County. I grew up on hardcore rap so you can't fool me with that metro bull$h!t.

what does sexuality have to do with the music!?! Kanye undoubtedly is the better artist. SO what if his struggles weren't selling dope, jail sentences and shoot outs. If you'd listen to the music you'd understand what his struggles were to become an artist.

lmao, again proven my point stanky. Only an adolescent would use the phrase butt suckers(Melissa Lee he is not from the hood or ghetto because he spelled suckers with the -ers instead -as) in an argument. You seem to be getting cranky so I know its past your bedtime. Bottomline is 50 caters to the pervasive ignorance you are demonstrating Stanky.

Kaliboy I never said Kan wasn't a B.I., he is, but musically he is superior to 50 IMO and the 130,000 more people that bought Kanyes CD yesterday then those that bought 50.

50's gangstaism is fizzling out and only a few loyal people are still buying into him. I mean I remember people that bought Hammer CD's into the late 90's after his dancing gimmick had worn off in the early 90's, he wasn't a rapper he was a gimmick just like 50.

I don't side with fiddy, I just don't side with pompous Kanye who thinks he is better than the rest of us.

It's eveident, by the name alone, that poostanky has to be some kind of ghetto, and maybe that's why you'd side with 50 cent.

You know what, Neza he is right, did you see Kanye on Punk'd. He remind me of a little sissy girl running around trying to hide his tape. LMAO

I meant I'll tell your mother little girl, but you're to young to understand that. I'm so tired of hurting these Kanye butt suckers, but what else would you have to live for if you like Americas Pop princess Kanye. Neza I thought you were smart for 12 until you posted against me and then called me 15. Will this make you happy "Kanye you go girl"

see what I mean. Poostanky just moved to the 15 year old white dude from the burbs demographic. Then he admitted he would snitch like his idol does, see what kind of role model 50 is for these kids.lmao.

Neza that was some of the dumbest s*^& to date that I've read here. Who Lived made you demographic Specialist, are you 18 or under? You need the help of your parents to post right and get of that baby cough syrup before I snitch.

Kanye is not as smart as he got y'all thinking he is. Its a play on words that goes in a circle but really say nothing. He is no better than anyother mc. Besides he's not charming, he's a cocky little boy wit an attitude and for some reason y'all like that. He may have some talent but it aint as good as you think. sad day when you think Kanye is doing something positive to help us. He talks alot of &*^% and the ROOTS says he ain't saying nothing.

Neza says:

Denographic wise reading this why I am feeling the pro Kanyes are the 18 and ups and pro 50 are 18 and under, just by discussion style and points that are made.

I would talk a lil smack to Curtis since he wants to post here but if I threaten him he will get a restraining orsder against me, like a real G. Then he will snitch and tell the police where I keep my dro, lol.

man all 50 raps about is money, hoes, and cars..people like him are the reason that hip hop is dying, hes obsessed with money, his hit single is about it. Hip - hop isn't about money, hoes and cars man, but my man KanYe raps about the things that matter like politics, relationships, issues in the world and in the hood. 50 is the reason that hip hop is dying, and kanye west is bringing it back to life. And 50 claims hes the king of new york man, screw that.. he lives in conneticuit.. man he sells all these records but i bet 90% of the sales are to wiggers, white females, and kids.. kanye got everybody.. he came from the bottom, no one thought he could do anything.. he proved them all wrong.. kanye wins .. f**k all ya'll who doesnt think so..

Ahhh baby, I'm sorry I stepped on your cute little pink toe nails JASON CHRISTIAN, but it is what it is. First of all poostanka means my $h!t stinks, "pumkin." Now can I speak to the real men. I know he made candy shop other songs like that and I don't like them but don't r&b singers sing to women, if they are hard or not. Anyhow it's a difference in making popcorn raps and being a popcorn rapper, but I wouldn't expect someone like Janny C. to know that.
fiddy is not the best by far but he's better than lolli pop queen, Kanye

Rylee, that was right on time and solidifies my point about this being more of a gimmick/image/personality battle and nothing about the music.

Yeah 50 grew up n the hood but he is out and has been out for years, yet still rapping about it like he was on the block at 2 am trying to move that last package on check day. To me that is the equivalent of Michael Jorda saying he is still the best basketball player in the world right now. You are right about Kanye though as far as him being a b*tch and a punk, but that takes nothing away from his musical ability and his creativity.

As of right now Kanye has outsold 50 on the 1st day by more then 100,000 units. Hopefully he will retire and start promoting more conscious rap that enlightens the masses to the society where thr rich just get richer and the rest argue over who is the fakest rapper on their cell phonew hile they look for spare change in ash tray so they fill the tank of their truck up.

50 all day everyday there is no comparison. he challenged kanye because theres been so much hype about west this summer and hes getting pretty dmn cocky because of it. so 50s settin him straight and proving hes better and always will be better. Kanye is spoiled little punk who thinks hes the shit. ill whoop his lil beezy ass right now.. the results will show. 50- SELLS 5 MILLION, west sells 2

rylee says:

see, yall are saying kanye wins, but when it comes down to it, kanye is a pussy. hes a spoiled lil b**ch and he complains about everything. he didnt grow up broke or in the hood. he was fine. 50 grew up a screw up and got rich BY HIS SELF. hes a money making machine cuz hes about business and is smart. kanyes lyrics are weak and orginal. it may be just my opinion but im sure im not standing alone. Reakl talk...

Ok fa real I have been around Hip Hop since the mid 80's . Right now I am not understanding how people are pitting this battle on a level of image , money and album sales and not actual artist ability and content. I have not seen one post of a hot line or verse from any of the posters yet I see how people say there lyrics are tight and flows are good. When you make statements like that you have to back them up to validate them. If you don't your just shooting in the dark and justifying only those that already agree with your point.

And on the other side if one outsells the other does that make him better, No. There style are two different all that means is that one has more people feelng hus style then the other. Hip Hop is becoming fascist with BS like this.

Someone posted that hip hop is Dying, but that is simply not true. It's forming new and more dynamic styles and some are good and some is trash. Some hater called out soulja boy and said this is a example of failed hip hop but to the contrary listen to his story how he branded his self and produce his own stuff from his computer and gained a hugh fan base.
I like his efforts and this kid will establish himself in hiphop. I'm not a fan of southern rap since I'm a Bronx NewYorker but this kid is fire. I wish people do research before posting.
BTW hiphop had 6 number one hits albums in the top ten last year, so it's hardly failing and now we got fallout boys and other white groups rapping so how is it that hiphop is dying. Even the media has it wrong.

Open your eyes folks, it's two rappers fair in their game trying to extort us for more money. The game is falling apart because of bootlegs and in order to regain some of that momentum hiphoppers need some new fire. Kanye and Fiddy both are full of it, and both are too cocky for their own good. But we buy into their fabricated bull*h%t when we post in their behalf.
Neither are good enough for our dough in this hard to live gas gouging generation. Please wake up to these suckers mc's. There are real hip hop a
