Maybe it’s the excitement of flashing lights or the bleachers full of fans shrieking their names, but stars can’t resist a little self-promotion on the red carpet.
At this year’s VIBE Awards, set to re-air on January 8 on MTV2, some of your favorite artists talked about their upcoming albums and latest singles, gushed about their favorite artists, and put rumors to rest.
Ginuwine, Funkmaster Flex, Kwame, Trillville, Slim Thug., Paul Wall, Big Boi, Mike Jones, and Boyz N Da Hood all had news about upcoming projects. Of his new album, Back II Da Basics, which was released they day the awards first aired, Ginuwine said, “It’s just typical Ginuwine, just doing my thing…. Usually I produce and write, like I usually write 90 percent and this time I only wrote about 40 percent.”
“Letting go some of the control wasn’t so bad,” he continued, “cause I was kind of ready to do that. I’ve been doing [everything] so much that I wanted to let somebody else come in and see if they could take me somewhere.”
Kwame talked about working with Janet Jackson on her upcoming album, noting that the album would be full of up-tempos and mid-tempos and would be “very energetic, very powerful. What we do is we just do a whole bunch of records… and let the best fall where they fall.”
Slim Thug said he was stoked about his recent collaboration with Gwen Stefani, though he initially though it was all a big joke. “Gwen for real just called me in the studio and said ‘this is Gwen. Holla at me in the studio.’ She got people following her around with cameras all the time. I actually thought I was on ‘Punk’d!’”
left But don’t expect Slim to make any appearances on the small screen – or the big screen – in any capacity other than a music video. When asked about whether he’d follow his peers into film, Slim explained, “There’ve been a few people who called me about it. Me personally, I don’t think I’m an actor. If I do do it, I would definitely get an acting coach first so I don’t make a fool out of myself. But they’ve been trying to get me in roles. They offered me a Scary Movie 4 part but it was kind of lame. They wanted me to be like ‘oh, is that P. Diddy over there.’ I’m like nah, chill.”
Slim’s H-town buddy, Mike Jones, meanwhile, was already talking about a brand new album he plans to release on April 18, 2006, called American Dreams. Mike also noted that the new album will be “mostly me,” though Trey Songz will make an appearance.
The rapper, who worked hard to brand himself this year, also revealed that he will be launching a clothing line (that’s in addition to the movie he’s working on, his album, and a label he’s starting up).
Though he wouldn’t say much about the clothing line, Mike did say that he wanted the clothes to be “something classy. I want something classy in the hood. I don’t want nothing that’s already out.”
Keeping it all in the Houston family, Paul Wall talked about his passion for making grills gleam. In fact, he did host Anthony Anderson’s grill, which he’d be anxious to work on for some time. “I wanted to do Anthony Anderson cause he’s got a gap in his mouth,” Wall said.
So who’s grill is he hoping to pimp now? “Pimp C,” he said. “I can’t wait for Pimp C to come out of jail so I can do his grill. His grill would cost about $25,000.”
Boyz N Da Hood helped put a rumor to rest when they explained that Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy were both still in the group, while George Clinton said he couldn’t keep track of all the people joining his.
“Every time I look around, there’s someone new on the stage,” he said. “I don’t know where they come from but they be there… They find the mothership.”
While most carpet-walkers were all about expressing love for fellow nominees and performers, one acid-tongued guest aired a bit of dirty laundry.
Reality TV villain Omorosa shared some news about upcoming projects (books, speaking tours, etc), she couldn’t resist a dig at fellow Surreal Life-er, Janice Dickinson. “Is she out of rehab? Oh, good for her,” she said. “It’s just so funny that in Hollywood, being on drugs is a rite of passage and people look at it like oh, congratulations, she’s been on drugs and she kicked the habit.”
As for the rumored beef with Ice-T? “I brought something just in case,” Omorosa said, tapping her purse. “You got a gun?,” one shocked interviewer asked. “No! I got lip gloss,” she said. “I got my ruby red lipstick. I can conquer the world with that.” Pout on, honey, pout on.
Oh, and if anyone involved with the production of the soundtrack for the upcoming (read: 2007) release of the Ghost Rider movie, Kwame is looking for a job. Wearing a skull belt that paid homage to the Marvel Comics character, Kwame said “I guess I’m pre-promoting. Maybe I can get a song on the soundtrack. Anybody listening, I’m doing soundtracks, people!”
