Hotel Check In
Hotel Helix in Logan Circle is on some next-level, retro-funky vibe. The colors are in heavy rotation from the purple awning, to the glowing lights in the lobby highlighting the red, yellow, purple and green carpet. It feels like you atre on the set of the latest Austin Powers flick - No matter what you're feeling at the moment that you check into your room, the set makes you feel like inviting a honey to your room and letting the design kick the game for you. Kickin It
After we got settled into our hotel we had personal downtime so, as you will learn, whatever cities help upgrade my collection of kicks will definitely spend some quality time with the Benjamins. I headed straight to DTLR (Downtown Locker Room) to cop a few pieces of HOBO and the DC Skater Shoe. Although both lines are distributed nationwide, DC has a few unique pieces not sold anywhere else because this is their hub. June 2, 2007
New York City - Hot 97 Summer Jam
It's embedded in my brain to ignore the fact that Sunday is actually the first day of the week, until an event like Summer Jam reminds me that although the South is a continuous rolling thunder, this is where the reign begins. As an eternal visitor to the New York area (big shout out to Jersey), I'm really careful to keep my gear simple and clean until I find out what's hot in the streets. So I headed up to 125th street in Harlem and hit up Jimmy Jazz, Cap USA, and Dr Jays to check out the latest styles and look for a few basic black polo style shirts. Apparently, now is not the time or the season to rock any less than a four-color combo, designer denim included. After searching in about four stores, I had to simplify my train of thought to match my desired wardrobe. I figured there was no better way to secure the basic polo needs than to take it back to my teenage years when everything was simple. I ended up in Jersey City shopping at New Port Mall at Champs. Snatched up three black polos for $30.00. This turned out to be a good look because the heat forced me to use all three in one night. Around 5 pm we had to do radio promotions at WPGC, a popular station in DC notorious for launching the career of my boy Bigg Tigg of course.
The show was at club LOVE, formerly known as Dream on New York Avenue. Club Love is big enough to get lost in or at least never see the people that you came with again if you make one wrong turn. Ne-Yo burned it down! "All Because of You" is still going strong in the clubs and people go even harder at the live performance. The Def Jam line up which featured Ne-Yo, Fab, Jeezy and Luda was sick from top to bottom - or representing New York to Atlanta, geographically speaking. The crowd favorite was definitely Jeezy and he murdered it! That cat's music was arranged perfectly, cranking out hit after hit so that the excitement of the crowd never died down. Jeezy: the view from the DJ booth. Fab made a special guest appearance the night before in Boston so it gave us a chance to meet and talk about their highly anticipated performance at Summer Jam. Fab, Ne-Yo and I were discussing the intro to "You Make Me Better" and I told Fab, "When I drop the record, just stand there and don't move."
"How long?" Fab asked.
"Five minutes."
"Five minutes?" Fab blurted out with a slight uncertainty. But being on the road and knowing how hot the song is, I was certain it was what New York would be waiting for. I assured him, "They will wait!"

Fab and Ne-Yo at Summer Jam.

Cut to Summer Jam stage. I dropped the intro to the instrumental. The spotlight beamed on Fabolous, ingeniously mounted in the official Run DMC b-boy stance - and there was pandemonium! Fab and Ne-yo's performance of "You Make Me Better" in the pouring rain had to be one of the biggest highlights of the night. Big shout out to my World Famous Superfriend comrade DJ Fahrenheit and DJ Jaycee, who shared DJ billing with me for the entire Def Jam segment.
Next stop, Atlanta!

Jeezy, Jadakiss
