VIBE correspondent, Joseph Young, catches up with Guru and Solar

We’re not here to chastise or put down the youth. In fact we’re here to expose them to the root of hip hop.

Still don’t have Jazzmatazz: The Timebomb / Back to The Future? Guru, from the legendary hip hop group Gangstarr and producer Solar talked to VIBE correspondent Joseph Young about what you’ve been missing.

VIBE: Describe this record.

Solar: Well, this is more like a companion to theJazzmatazz Vol. 4: The Hip Hop Jazz Messenger, which was released last year. It’s more straight forward hip hop. More of what you would call "golden era" hip hop music.

Guru: You have cats on there like Damien Marley, dope emcees like Mr. Lif, Aceyalone…

Solar: Blue Scholars....

Guru: C. Knowledge from Digable Planets and others just to name a few.

What do you guys feel you’ve brought to the table with this record?

Solar: I feel we’ve [brought] another aspect of what’s missing.  We’re not here to chastise or put down the youth. In fact we’re here to expose them to the root of hip hop. I think that’s been the problem with other acts, is that the first thing they start to do is down these brothers. We’re not here to do that. We invite them to come check out what we’re doing. We're just adding the balance that hip hop needs now.

Tell us a little about 7 Grand [Records].

Guru: It was started by me and Solar.  Right now we have some dope artist like Young Pablo, Highpower and K. Born out of Philly. Right now it's about adding balance, and I think that’s what 7 Grand and the whole Jazzmatazz series is doing right now.

Guru and Solar are our modern day heros of Hip Hop music. They have come to rescue us from a industry of garbage and nonsense (no Sense of reality). You only have to open your mind and listen to the brillance of Guru's lyrics and Solars musical genious.
