Last week VIBE.com revealed VH1’s honorees for their 5th annual Hip Hop Honors. While we’d love to extend our prized patience and wait until October to comment on the credibility of each chosen performer, we tend to push for pro-activity here. With that said, here’s our list of top performance picks for this year’s anticipated Triple H. VH1, we hope you're reading.
Honoree: Cypress Hill
Tribute Song: “Insane in the Brain”
Performing Act: Gym Class Heroes
Stage Cred: Most of the time a musical group’s hefty banking is fruited within a star-powered eclipse. Such was the case with C. Hill’s fiery hit man, B Real and such is the case with GCH’s front-stunner, Travis McCoy. Sly production crossovers from psychedelic warps, to sonorous rock & rhyme melds undoubtedly position these two on the same playing field.
Honoree: De La Soul
Tribute Song: “Me, Myself & I”
Performing Act: Kanye West, Common, Consequence
Stage Cred: Cool kids don’t have to pull triggers. Especially when their weapons of mass destruction are neon-coated beats and quippy rhyme play. In true De La fashion, this trio of lefters consistently proves that an alternative route can lead to the sweetest of discoveries.
Honoree: Naughty by Nature
Tribute Song: “Hip Hop Hooray”
Performing Act: Clipse
Stage Cred: Swag is undeniable and Naughty by Nature delivered effortlessly. It takes a towering level of dexterity to mount a bucking pop track with ease, while still gaining a bid from the streets. The passionate affair between Clipse’s nimble, but gritty flows and The Neptunes off-kilter sonics make the blood duo an approvable match for Treach and Vinnie.
Honoree: Slick Rick
Tribute Song: “Children’s Story”
Performing Act: Nas
Stage Cred: Poignant storytelling is a slippery task to grip. It needs to be digestive yet potent, original yet recyclable, fresh yet aged and unarguably dope. Who better to turn the pages of a Ricky D. tale than esteemed rap narrator Nasir Jones?
Honoree: Too $hort
Tribute Song: “Freaky Tales”
Performing Act: Lil Wayne
Stage Cred: Cali may have birthed a son of searing virility, but New Orleans certainly raised one. Never the anonymous sexaholics, both Too $hort and Weezy are fiends for two five-letter words – money and pussy. Case closed.
