It may have been one number shy of 16, but VIBE’s 15th Anniversary Party was a sweet occasion.
The event on Tuesday evening, hosted by BET rising star, Alesha Renee, was a grand affair, bringing together VIBE family, major industry players, and celebrities at New York City’s Cathedral. Walls were adorned with canvassed VIBE covers, hors d’oeuvres were passed, liquor (provided by Moet Hennessy and Heineken) was flowing, and DJ D-Nice kept the party rocking all night.
But the highlight of the evening was the live performances. Considering VIBE’s long history with urban music, it was only appropriate for the lineup to be a mix of old school and new. As was the case with VIBE itself, the party kicked off with a performance by Naughty By Nature (those in the know will recall Treach graced the test issue of VIBE), who ran through all their hits. Grand Puba and Doug E. Fresh also represented for the old school.
R&B singer Estelle, smoothed out the crowd with her hit, “American Boy", and lead the crowd in a rendition of “Happy Birthday” for the VIBE staff,.” Then, in what was an impromptu performance, Swizz Beatz stormed the stage performing his latest hit, “Oprah” as well as “It’s Me Snitches.” But that was only the beginning: Swizzy called out T.I., who also was in attendance, to hop on stage and perform a couple of songs. He and Swizz then rocked the crowd out to “Bring ‘Em Out” and T.I.’s current club banger, “Louie Rag.”
The occasion was sponsored by Moet Hennessy, Heineken, and the movie Street Kings (Fox Searchlight) starring Common, The Game, Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker.
