I think some other artists come really close, like Lupe Fiasco, Ludacris, The game or Andre 3000, or others. But Em is mad consistent with his thing. ODT3, record sales are eveeeeeerrrryyyyything! Over 85 million records sold is a huuuuugeee success especially since it is soooo hard to sell records these days. He came in at the time when MP3, Napster, Limewire, and all those Free Music stuff came out yet he was able to sell over 85 million records...THAT DOESNT EVEN INCLUDE BOOTLEGGED CD'S....If people voted on him as the best rapper, he is the best. Name one rapper near his skills...Other than that, I think Jay-z, Nas, T.I., The Game, and Nas are also Honorable Mentions especially for keeping Hip Hop alive....

But didnt Eminem help all of these rappers produce a song? Most notable famous one that Eminem produced was Nas's song, "The Cross"

anyhow, i hope that there some folks that can get my point. em is a very good lyricist. but imo, he is no better than folks like royce, black thought ect that are just as talented lyrically but are unknown to most of the mainstream. to say he is the best would be disrespectful to a ton of other rappers that makes music as good if not better than him. i'd say if this were a 100 meter dash, due to his credentials and his privileges he would start out at the 20 meter mark and look back at everyone else. this by no means is to disrespect or discredit the dude but please acknowledge that he does carry an advantage over everyone else. he can make any type of music whenever he wants and it will get pushed throughout the mainstream media.

em is a great lyricist. without question. lyrically, he is very good. however, em gets a mainstream push unseen to other rappers. em gets played on radio and other media outlets REGARDLESS the song. in contrast, mainstream media outlets will not play other rappers unless it's a commercial song( sex, drugs, and violence). em has the flexibility that no other rapper has on a major label. he can make or release any material without his label putting it on the backburner for not being marketable or easily digestable. em sold millions of rappers for being a great white rapper. not because he was the best. that amoungst other reasons why the source magazine hated on the dude so much. is he great? yes ! is he 500 times better than everyone else? no! even he admits and acknowledges the reasons for his success. he even had a song regarding the issues above "white america". with that said, i agree that em is definitely dope but he gets the extra push that he would not have gotten if he were say ..... royce 5'9 or crooked i amoungst countless other rappers. if it were not for mixtapes, we would not here the music that most rappers really want to make instead of their albums that were structured by their records labels. imo, none of em's records are classics. granted, most of them are better than most of the "hot" records out now. however, i would not put one of his records up with "illmatic" or "reasonable doubt". let alone "american gangster" or "untitled".

overall, this entire bracket was COMPLETELY DISRESPECTFUL to the artform of hip hop. so many talented rappers were not listed and most importantly, too many rappers on here that by no means even deserve to be considered (missy, webbie, soulja thing). realistically, do you think many if any of the rappers above can go line for line or concept for concept with say....... redman? very doubtful.

i think most people say that since someone is their favorite rappers that means they are the best. for me, my favorite rappers are talib and styles p. i would not say that either one would be the best. nor, would i put say lil wayne or ti over them because they are more popular and have more commercial success. i can remember at a time when both big and pac was alive. i think it was maybe sway of mtv asked tupac who was the best rapper out and he quickly said rass kass. yes, rass kass. however, i bet most of you people have no clue about the dude.

to be the best, you have to put out the best albums. not just commercially but creatively and artistically.

bap3221, 2Pac completed 5 solo albums while alive, not to mention his non-solo work and posthumous releases. Biggie released 2 albums, and did work with Junior Mafia and others. Their talent, sales, and influence are legendary. There's a reason everyone says they're the best ever. This was for best ALIVE, though, so they couldn't be included.

Oh, I'm not hating on the new guys, either. T.I. and Lil' Wayne (though they aren't new, they're kind of the big dogs on top now) surely deserve a place on there along with Hova and Esco. But Webbie? No. Seriously, talent, not sales, image, or age is what has to rule in the end. It seems like rap forgets some of its best artists awfully quickly. In the late 90s, everyone thought DMX was going to own the game, but he didn't even make this list. Pharoahe Monch released what was widely hailed as one of the best albums of '07, yet Shawty Lo (who obviously is on here only because T.I. has beef with him) makes the list. And where the f**k is Prodigy? He's been great for over a decade, he's still red hot today, but he never seems to make these lists.

Many of the rappers in these brackets have no place on there. Honestly, who would say Paul Wall, Soulja Boy, Bow Wow, or Cassidy are viable candidates to be considered the best rapper alive today? Not to say that these are not talented artists, but they are far from the best. A lot of masterful old school rappers still in action today (i.e. KRS, Chuck D, Rakim) weren't even on the roster. I was also surprised that GZA didn't make the list with the other Wu members; anyone remember Liquid Swords? I'm a white boy on the west coast, but I don't think The Game is anywhere near the best of the rappers in the Big Pun group, or that Eminem is the best rapper alive. I'd rank Em somewhere in the top 10, and he certainly has potential, but if you look at his catalog and then look at someone like Nas's you have to admit he still has a ways to go. Not to mention that Shady records hasn't had a solid new album release in the last five years. Maybe after Detox and "King Mathers" (or whatever it will be called) I'll feel differently. For those who discredit Em because he raps about his mom and daughter, go listen to "Juicy" or "Dear Mama", classic songs by Big and Pac. If you don't think that's real rap, then you don't know shit about hip-hop. That's a lame-ass reason to discount Em's credibility.

This is the toughest competition OF ALL TIME. Em is a great rapper so is Jay-Z so is Nas. This day an age new takes over old. Thats why Webbie and Boosie and Solja Boy were included. However, even Em, Nas and Jay-Z would say KRS-1 and Slick Rick should have been included. We've gotten to a point where we don't pay homage anymore.

That's the real crime, because rap wouldnt even exist the way it does if it wasn't for paying homage. Thats why James Brown is the most sampled artist of ALL TIME. I might sound old or even dumb for paying homage to old school. But its what I do. I wonder if any of the voters even heard of Kool G. Rap? He isn't relevant in the young voter's eyes and that's where the real issue arises.

I just finished reading your latest issue.The idea for an NCAA type ranking system for "The greatest rapper alive" was a great and fair way to judge them. I don't particularly understand how Jay-Z lost to Eminem, but I guess the people have spoken. It would' ve also been nice to see my personal favorite Nas win, but I knew that wouldn't happen, during this new hip-hop generation. My only issue with the system was that there was a Pimp C bracket before there was an Eazy-E one. How did that happen? He didn't go out in a heroic way, but he contributed way more to the music than Pimp C.

And I think Marshall Bruce Mathers III earned the title "Best Rapper Alive" for a two reasons:

1. He's the highest selling rapper of all time(70Million+ sold) the only rapper to come close to that is Pac which is around 50mil+. Wanna know how he did that? Well first off HE CAN RAP! And PLEASE dont try to tell me he cant. Because then i just know you're full of it. He was signed by Dr. DRE! Dr. DRE!!!! The same Dr. DRE that did work with pretty much everyone else that you grew up listening to. You can deny that Eminem is not great with his lyrics. YES he does get a little cartoonish at times, but its called having fun. And I'm sure you had to have laughed at something clever he's said.

2. Not only is he a white rapper, but he is a black rapper too. What? Think about it. All the biggest names in rap are still around because they appealed to a mass audience, meaning black, white, yellow, red. Not many can do that.
