Progression rightfully calls for reflection and the fifth annual VH1 Hip Hop Honors mirrored just that, honoring a diverse set of artists who have stacked layers of artistry to ignite a new a generation of hip hop. Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Naughty by Nature, Slick Rick and Too $hort were 2008’s resplendent five to receive their glory.
Housed in New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, this year’s show elected the theme ‘The United States of Hip Hop,’ with host Tracy Morgan campaigning to a caucus of avid supporters, young and old, for a continuum of hip hop transmission. The evening beamed with transcendent back-in-the-day treasures that have righteously inspired the 21st century of hip hop. With moments both eccentric and exceptional, we had to spoil you with some HHH highlights. Make sure to check for these moments tonight, on the VH1 Hip Hop Honors, airing tonight at10 p.m. ET.

Best Old School Collabo: Wu Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah spitting sparks from Slick Rick’s ‘La Di Da Di’ over rounds of vintage beat-boxing via victor Biz Markie.
Best Old School Tribute: Mos Def, Scaface, Flavor Flav, Chuck D, Cee-lo, and The Roots rhyming through a glossy medley of Issac Hayes-inspired antiques from Public Enemy’s "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos" to Biggie’s "Warning".

TOP 5 NEW SCHOOL MOMENTS
Best New School Nod: Gym Class Heroes champ, Travis McCoy finessing every high-pitched bar from "Insane in the Brain". Apparently, somebody over at VH1 reads VIBE.com, right?

Worst New School Moment: Juelz Santana teetering through mumbles and stumbles during a rendition of Naughty by Nature’s "Ghetto Bastard". Note to Lupe: Your torch has been passed.
