The-Dream and Christina Milian: Love vs. Money

When couples make music together is it all about the love, or the Benjamins?

When The-Dream signed Christiana Milian to his Radio Killa label several weeks ago, the ties linking the blogs’ newest hot topic together cinched that much tighter. The two still deny anything beyond a professional relationship (and we’re still struggling to come to terms with Milian’s blond hair), but even when photos of the pair playing in the Hawaiian surf surfaced earlier this week, the streets couldn’t stop asking: is this duo coupled up for love or money? Or more to the point, is Milian actually pursuing her own, um, stimulus plan? All of which got us thinking about the validity of other famous music-fueled romantic hook-ups. Let’s get it in!

Prince and Vanity

The Pair: Prince & Vanity
The Product: “Nasty Girl” (Warner Bros., 1982)
Love Or Money? More like lust. We can only imagine what Minneapolis’ resident genius and straight-no-chaser freak and Denise “Vanity” Matthews were up to in the studio while recording Vanity 6’s strip club staple. But Prince’s former, lingerie-clad, criminally gorgeous muse may have given us a rather risqué clue: “I need seven inches or more…” Yikes.

Mary J. Blige & K-Ci

The Pair: Mary J. Blige & K-Ci
The Product: “I Don’t Want To Do Anything” (MCA, 1993)
Love or Money? Love…but a tumultuous one. The pair’s drug-fueled abusive relationship has been the stuff of music legend. But this heartfelt track captures an otherwise tender moment from the Queen of Hip Hop Soul and Jodeci’s guff-voiced front man.

Erykah Badu & Common

The Pair: Erykah Badu & Common
The Product: “Love Of My Life” (Motown, 2000)
Love or Money? Badu has joked about the mythical power of her seductive gaze over hip hop MCs during past concerts (she’s had children with Outkast’s Andre 3000, West Coast legend the D.O.C. and most recently indie-rap newcomer Jay Electronica). Indeed, paper chasing was the least of Common’s worries when it came to dealing with the powerful Bag Lady.

Joss Stone & Raphael Saadiq

The Pair: Joss Stone & Raphael Saadiq
The Product: “Put Your Hands On Me” (Relentless, 2007)
Love or Money? We still can’t decide if Dallas Austin’s accusations back in 2007 that painted the British blue-eyed soul vocalist as “fucking for tracks” were real. But the fact that we haven’t seen Stone and the one-time Tony! Toni! Toné! leader coupled up in a minute speaks volumes.

Rihanna & Chris Brown

The Pair: Chris Brown & Rihanna
The Product: “Umbrella” remix (Def Jam, 2008)
Love or Money? Throughout their brief romance Brown and Ri Ri were equals in terms of celebrity, so we have to go with good ol’ fashion puppy love. C.B.’s intentions were to make Ri Ri his  “Cinderella.” Um, so how did that work out?
