Four reasons our money says the kid is not retiring

Around 7 a.m. this morning, Kid Cudi posted a mad emo blog about how he’s not going to make anymore solo albums after he drops his still-pending debut, Man on the Moon: The Guardians (GOOD/Uinversal), whenever that might be. Since then, bloggers have been blogging, and twitizens have been twittering, all demanding the same thing: Say it ain’t so, Cudi!

Well, we have news for you: it ain’t.

Jay-Z, Too $hort and The Game are just a few of the rappers who have all retired like Michael Jordan in recent years, only to come back like Michael Jordan. We can’t help but feel like this announcement by Cudi is more of the same song. And here are just four reasons why.

1.    Dude, you just got signed! C’mon, you’re going to tell us that Universal Motown President and all around thorough-ass boss lady Sylvia Rhone signed you to some magical one-album deal where you can just drop a classic (we expect nothing else) and be out like Lauryn Hill? Sorry, sir, it’s not happening. Even in today’s climate, the majors don’t get down like that. Besides…

2.    It’s a recession! In your post you said “the drama that comes with [being an artist] is more overwhelming than the shit I was dealing wit [sic] when I was piss poor broke.” Well, Cudi, guess what? You have good problems. As your boy Kanye once said, “Having money’s not everything/not having it is.” And we’re guessing someday soon – maybe not tomorrow, maybe not next week, but soon – you’ll wake up and feel the same. Trust us. And speaking of Kanye…

3.    What Would Kanye West Do! Your retirement post (Ed: “iam sorry,” real title) definitely makes it sound like you’ve been going through some things, but so has your musical mentor. His problems—the passing of moms, the end of his engagement—were real enough to make any man retire. But did Kanye walk away? Nah, Kid! Following that whole whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger thing, he flipped lemons into a lemonade stand and made a killing hawking an album you might have heard of: 808s & Heartbreak (GOOD/Def Jam, 2008)? You should do the same with your project and any other music you’re working on. All of which brings us to our final call of your bluff…

4.    You’re not technically retiring!  In the post you casually mentioned you’re still doing the collabo album with fellow Cleveland MC, Chip Tha Ripper, and a big show in the summer where you’ll perform the entire A Kid Named Cudi mixtape. Um, THAT’S NOT RETIRING! Look it up.
