Proving that she was just not another pretty girl with a pretty voice, Mariah Carey picked up BMI’s prestigious Songwriters of the Year honor on May 19, 1993. For the multi-platinum, five octave vocalist it was a banner year as she was cited at the 41st Annual Pop Awards Dinner at the Regent Beverly Wilshire for her work on the hits “Can’t Let Go,” “Make It Happen,” and “Emotions.”
Carey had already released two chart-topping albums—her 1990 self-titled Columbia debut and 1991’s follow-up Emotions. By the close of the decade, Mariah Carey would be crowned the top selling female performer of the ‘90s.
Since then, she has experienced both epic failure (2001’s universally lambasted Glitter (20th Century Fox)movie and soundtrack) and an acclaimed comeback (2005’s Island release The Emancipation of Mimi, which more than six million copies). The singer-songwriter-producer, who married comedic actor Nick Cannon in April of 2008, is now ranked second only to The Beatles as the artist with the most No. 1 Billboard hits (18).
