Thicke's A Beautiful World
Robin Thicke left us thirsting for more than Sprite last summer. The 25-year-old songwriter whet our musical pallets while promoting the soda with his first single, "When I Get You Alone." After hearing his voice flow over the disco classic, "A Fifth of Beethoven," we had to wait almost a year until his album debuted.... (read more)
Summer Jam X
The weather forecast promises rain all day and into night, and the temperature is expected to be cold and damp; not the ideal conditions for what is supposed to be the hip hop party of the year. But as concertgoers pack into New Jersey’s Giant Stadium Arena for Hot 97’s Summer Jam X, the hip hop fashionistas don’t seem to care that the rain is messing with their apparel. Brand-new throwbacks, white-on-white Air Force Ones, and designer velour sweat suits are the gear of choice. Still, tonight isn’t about making a fashion statement. It’s all about HOT 97’s annual star-studded extravaganza featuring hip hop’s royalty of the moment—50 Cent and his mentor Eminem. Also included in the New York radio station’s 10-year anniversary outing, which runs for five-plus hours, are Busta Rhymes, Nas, Lil’ Kim, Nelly, Sean Paul, Clipse, and Fabolous doing their damn thing to what Hot 97’s programming departments reports is a sold-out crowd of 55,000.... VIBE Online Film Pick: Tupac & Biggie
In the land of make-believe, otherwise known as Hollywood, crimes can be committed, investigated, and solved in an hour-long show. No matter how great the cover-up, the bad guys always get caught and the goody-goodies always walk away happy. But in "Reality, U.S.A.," things are not always that simple. In Biggie & Tupac, the new documentary by Nick Broomfield — the British filmmaker, who is famous for his stalker-like approach to filmmaking — tries to uncover the mysteries surrounding the unsolved murders of East Coast rapper the Notorious B.I.G. and his West Coast “rival” Tupac Shakur.... VIBE Online Film Pick - Barbershop
It’s been a busy year for Ice Cube. First up was last
spring’s all-too-forgettable All About the Benjamins.
The sequel to a sequel Friday After Next comes out this
fall. Sandwiched between the two flicks is Barbershop, a
day-in-the-life ensemble comedy set in a Southside of Chicago
barbershop.
Cube plays the shop owner Calvin, the type of guy you imagine that
Cube’s Friday character Craig will probably be one
day. A wanna-be music producer, Calvin’s got a wife, a child
on the way and the family business he inherited from his father.
But he still can’t quite get it together. Fed up with his
newfound responsibility, Calvin secretly sells the shop to the
neighborhood loan shark.... (read more)
