The Cosby Show depicted a close knit, wealthy African-American family based in New York. Comedian Bill Cosby portrayed the patriarch and OB-GYN Heathcliff Huxtable while the stunning Phylicia Rashad starred as his attorney wife Clair Huxtable - a happily married couple, who were constantly solving issues related to raising a brood of five precocious children.
Most remember The Cosby Show as one of the greatest sitcoms of its time, but the Season One DVD doesn't quite hold up as well. Sure, all the classic first season episodes are included – remember when Rudy's goldfish died and the family held a makeshift funeral in the bathroom, or the time Denise made Theo that horrendous knock off Gordon Gartrell shirt – but unlike their original airing's, the DVD episode's are all edited with two minutes of footage missing. In the long run, you might be better off catching the show during its millions of airings in syndication.
While the DVD does boast the usual extra's that are included to boost DVD packages (i.e. bloopers, audition footage, and deleted scenes), don't get your hopes up on seeing Tempest Bledsoe (Vanessa) or Lisa Bonet (Denise) flubbing lines. This collections extra's only include the previously aired reunion special, A Look Back, which premiered two years ago on NBC. If you're a real fan of the show (And anyone who purchases a show DVD should be considered such), you most likely saw this special the first time around.
While we applaud Bill Cosby for bringing an alternative, eye-opening view of the African American experience to the world, I just wish he brought the same type of innovation to this somewhat bland collection.
