With power just beginning to come back to lower Manhattan four days after Hurricane Sandy hit New York, a scary rumor spread on social media. The rumor claimed that burglars were posed as Con Edison power company employees, and were using the disguises to rob unsuspecting homes downtown. Of course, there is no evidence that anything close to this has happened, but that didn't stop the warnings from spreading via email, Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter.
The rumors became so pervasive that ConEd was forced to address them via Twitter.
@conedison#ConEd All Con Edison employees have legit IDs; worried about imposters: call 1-800-75CONED or 911.

With power snapping back to the city, it's pretty clear that the men in the ConEd uniforms, and all first responders, are the good guys.
