'Boyz N Da Hood' Movie Turned Into Dance Performance

'Boyz N Da Hood' Movie Turned Into Dance Performance

Jazmine Henley-Brown Posted November 15, 2012

35-year old choreographer and dance company owner Kyle Abraham recently debuted a stunning performance of his inspiring dance titled “Pavement”. The powerful recital was stirred not only by the 1991 John Singleton film, Boyz N The Hood, but also by the early teachings of W.E.B Du Boi “The Soul of Black Folk.” Abraham explained the concept of the powerful number:

“Thinking about those pieces of literature and that film, The Souls of Black Folk saying ‘this is where we are, this is where we could be’ and looking at Singleton’s film in ’91 saying, ‘this is where we are now. Genocide, Killing each other.’ And putting that into context of whats going now in society, where are we now? Where have we come? Is it full circle?”

Watch below as Kyle explains the concept behind Pavement which debuted at Harlem Stage's Gatehouse venue
